OK....I've tried really hard to find any sort of information on Tech Groups but I can't find anything.

Does anyone have information about the differences between the Latin, Orthodox (does this exist?), Moslem, etc. tech groups? I hear a lot of people talk about it (and certain event effects in the game changes your Tech group) but I really have no idea what any of this means.

Well AFAIK there are 5 techgroups: Latin, Orthodox, Muslim, Chinese and excotic, all it changes are your techcosts. (Check this thread

OK thanks - I read part of that just now but I'll have to read the rest later.

I wonder why Paradox never came out with a manual that explains all of these formulas? Why leave it up to us?

I guess since the game is constantly changing that would be too hard to do though.

I don't know, but I had/have a similar feeling. For example, combat isn't explained, as is CRT (Combat Resolution Table IIRC). You get a tooltip that Land level 9 gives "improved CRT". How am I supposed to know what that means? Only after reading the Battle System faq here on the forum do I have a bit of an idea how things work combat-wise. It is a weak point of a otherwise fine product.

I will make two comments:

1. The manual, as an explanation of game mechanics, is essentially useless, and was even for version 1.00 (too many errors to be reliable).

2. There is a whole forum of Frequently Asked Questions threads, wherein most of your answers have been patiently answered by the many very dedicated volunteers of this Message Board over the course of the last four years.


You all might want to check that out some time. :wacko:


(PS: It includes a detailed explanation of the combat system AND a VERY detailed explanation of all things economic in the game) :cool:

Because we're not "supposed" to be playing to these formulas, but rather see these formulas as a means of getting a game with a historical "feel" ?

There's plenty of games (RTS, FPS) where you, for example, don't get to see the exact hit calculations (damage done, damage absorbed by armor, etc.) -- which is probably governed by formulas as well.

You need to read the [thread=157925]Economy FAQ[/thread] carefully, especially at section 4.5. :)


The [thread=172908]Diplomacy FAQ[/thread] is another very important thread. I'd say most questions can be answered by one or the other of these two threads. I don't know how many times I've answered questions about diplo-annexation that can be answered simply by reading what lawkeeper wrote in that FAQ. :p

So Latins pay the normal cost and exotics pay about double. Granted the FAQ has ALL KINDS of nifty formulas and specifics about religion modifiers, effects of empire size, isolation penalties, etc, so it's great and all, but there's the basic answer.
