Having one group lead research seems plausible, but I am not sure if that's how it worked. Wouldn't assigning IC to different companies be a much more realistic approach?

Not really. to take the M4 Sherman as an example:

Designer: U.S. Army Ordnance Department
Manufacturer:
American Locomotive Co.
Baldwin Locomotive Works
Detroit Tank Arsenal
Federal Machine and Welder Co
Fisher Tank Arsenal
Ford Motor Company
Lima Locomotive Works
Pacific Car and Foundry Company
Pressed Steel Car Company
Pullman-Standard Car Company

another example, the German Panther tank was a design by MAN, but built by both MAN, Daimler Benz, MNH and Henschel.

The soviets used design bureau for most stuff, inlcuding t-34 which was built all over the place.

Stuff works a lot differently in war than in peace. we have set up companies so that you pick based on who you want designing and researching, rather than producer, which as you see above, matters a lot less.

I am very interested to see how 'Tech Groups' are coded! My thoughts are to mod so that you would need MAN active to research/unlock the Panther model. Or a combo of companies when historically one company designed the turret & another designed the hull. In my thinking they would not need to stay active just for production.

Now if I can code it to have a company give a bonus to the speed of production of 1 model of tank (or aircraft or whatever) or a different company active to reduce the number of factories need for that model or less resources that would be nice. And/or having a company active reduces the cost/speed of production of 1 model and increases the cost/speed of production of a different model. Players would need to make choices! I also hope to make having a company active cost something.

I disagree. Companies developed tanks according to what the needs at the time and what the current standard is, along with input from battle experience. Whether MAN, DB or Mario&LuigiWW2MotorShop developed it is of smaller consequence. As long as there are enough input variables influencing the output, it is unlikely to vary. The only reason MAN developed the Panther was because it was one of th e 3 companies at the time that was in the pool of companies producing tank equipments for Germany at teh time.

Now the speed is debatable, but making it a prerequisite is absurd.

I get your point.

There were two turret types for the Tiger II, Henschel & Porsche types. So it does matter which company is active. Yes, there would have been a Tiger II either way, but which one? So you will likely think my mod 'is absurd' and it will likely be more detail oriented than some will want. I also disagree that something like the Spitfire is inevitable, it came out of one mans mind! It will be based in history and teach history.

Actually Krupp designed both turrets.

Alright, if you know then you know. I had always read they were Henschel & Porsche turrets. At some point I will have to look closely into it and see the reasons. My plan is to mod something that lets the player research/unlock historical models, very much like Vorwärts Panzers Mods did for HoI3 but with tanks/aircraft and not units. I really like the idea of Tech Groups and want them to be active to unlock the model types. Switching between 'Companies' would/should have a cost. There were many different subtypes designed by different companies and if you want a subtype my thinking is that, among other things, you would need that 'Tech Group' active. I will need to look at the code and see what can be done.

What would be an interesting mod would be to expand the categories of companies so that each research project has its own company. Instead of all light planes by the same company, your interceptor by one and your dive bomber by another and your torpedo bomber by a third. Your medium tank by one, but the tank destroyer based upon the same chassis by another. Then the company used to develop the model should also change the name of the model.

I will agree with you that historical this was the case but in any game some things have to be simplified to make it a game otherwise you would be playing production design simulator WW2 and not a war game.
