Every time I tell my fleet to attack a target in a system they abandon that order to attack whatever they come across first. This is regardless of fleet posture (whether I have them set to aggressive or neutral behavior). For example, I just tried to attack an enemy frontier outpost, only to have my ships stop at every mining station between them and the star.

Is there something I'm missing here? Is there a way to get your ships to take and keep an order?

Well, you can maneuver around tthe edge of system, or use a different entry point (by jumping in from a different system) to get a clearer path. Or, just bring bigger raiding party. Stations should melt instantly against any proper armed raiding team.

just because you intend to be precise doesnt necessarily mean you can be once the action starts, games like this dont accurately portray things like the difficulty of just flying past and ignoring something that is shooting at you to go for another target which is why mechanics like this exist.

that said i do think that you should be able to tell your fleets to ignore mining and research stations, they are in no way a threat to any of your ships. any kind of military station or ship however should force you to engage it rather than just flying past.

Wouldn't be such a problem if the ships wouldn't slow down to a crawl during battle. I was pursuing enemy fleet yesterday, which only managed to escape because a mining station got in the way and my whole fleet practically halted their movement to fire.

If there is a station in the way or in range they WILL engage it, primarily because the mining station WILL engage them

Mining and research stations? They're civilian targets with a few tiny lasers. They're all over the place and don't pose any threat to my ships. The upshot is that my fleets of all sizes keep stopping to play whack-a-mole, and by the time they get to the real target (starbase, frontier outpost, etc.) enemy reinforcements have arrived. Or the target has escaped. Or the fleet reached its starbase, and now has 1k of additional strength. Etc.

Personally, I'd like my fleets to just do what I tell them, but at the very least they should be able to ignore civilian targets.

I think they need to have four Rules of Engagement options in addition to the "stances". Fire at all Hostiles, Fire at Hostile Military vessels Only, Hold Fire unless fired upon or ordered to attack a specific target (a fleet counts as a whole target, this wouldn't let you attack one ship), and Do Not Fire.

One of the easiest Solutions is really the One of Un-Arming Mining-/Research-Stations + 2 Replacements for the aggressive Fleet-Stance: The first One ignores un-armed Stuff and attacks armed Stuff like Fleets/Military-Stations/Spaceports and after That, the Colony-Bombing begins + The second One attacks un-armed Stuff and armed Stuff and after That, the Colony-Bombing begins ...

I would even consider to arm Transport-Ships (at Least with 1 small Weapon for each One) since They are worth to destroy, too.

In Stellaris, every click you make to direct your fleet is what the RTS genre calls an 'attack move'. Your fleet will move to the designated spot, and engage any hostile stuff along the way. This is why you'll right click on an enemy fleet, and half way there your fleet will be like, "oh look a butterfly!" and attack some science station while they eat long range weapons fire.

They need to separate move, attack, and attack move. If we want to specifically target one thing, we should be able to imo.

Maybe civilian, but they are valid targets, afterall they can damage the enemies economy with their destruction. I consider them valid targets

Funnily enough, on today's dev stream, cKnoors fleet got distracted by a mining station and his other fleet took heavy losses thanks to that. Wiz said he is planning to fix the issue.

Just this, this is basic rts mechanics from the dawn of time, auto targeting is useful but a click should override a auto target until the manually clicked target is dead even if its not in your best interests. Common sense 101.

My experience https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/worst-targeting-ever.1011484/

Is there a way to get your ships to take and keep an order?

everytime anything get's with in anything else's combat range, combat starts. This is to simulate the EU style of combat from other paradox games.
