So I was watching all the content Paradox had for Waking the Tiger mainly the World War Wednesdays and the 3 day war on youtube and I had an idea. I don't think I've seen anything exactly like it on these forums before so I thought I would just throw the thought out there.
It seems pretty clear that the Axis and to a possible extent the Soviet Union are going to be more and more limited to resources access thanks to the way convoy raiding is going to work. Da9L as Germany was practically starving for tungsten once the war started and had to begin a desperate invasion of Spain and Portugal to get more.
My idea is to add a new feature in the create variation mechanic, this feature would be the option to use inferior metals in your tank design. For example if Germany wanted to reduce the amount of tungsten it was using for the Panzer IVs or the amount of Chromium it was using for the Tigers, it could create a variation that uses less tungsten/chromium and more steel. 2 steel for every 1 tungsten/chromium and a large malus on the tank design's reliability. The less tungsten/chromium used, the bigger the malus. These hypothetical Panzer IVs would still be superior to Panzer IIIs however, just less reliable as the inferior metals would cause parts of the tank to break more easily.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe the Germans did something like this in their own tank programs historically. They were constantly trying to create new tank designs and variations of pre-existing designs to use their resources (mainly oil) more efficiently.
This was just a very rough idea I wanted to throw out there.
