I think tanks should stay the same size class when upgraded. Basic light tanks should only upgrade to advanced light tanks, even is you have heavy tanks etc.

I don't see this as upgrading the tanks (slap on new armor plates, bigger gun etc), it's retraining the crews on new vehicles straight from the factories.

By 1942 though, the formations were generally based around PZ IIIs and IVs, while by 1944, you saw a core of PZ IVs supported by Independant Tiger battalions (Most of the Panthers ended up in Waffen SS divisions).
So the historical refit pattern saw a switch from light to medium tanks, and, in the case of the Waffen SS divisions, on to heavy tanks.

That's certainly true, but when you look at it, the game's whole "a division is made up of a single type of tank" is wildly a-historical as well.

If I was a micro managing machine, I might like to go through a process where I could design the whole army structure and build it that way.
So many Pnz Is with Pnz IIs, upgrade these bttns or rgmts, introduce various reccon units, anti-tank, flak, - the whole enchalada built from the ground up.
I love looking through those structure trees you find on the net, OOBs and TOEs. Of course, I always play grognard.
Then, for real fun, you would have to tie in the organization with the tech tree, but you would only be allowed to advance AFTER you acquire the right amount of the right kind of battlefield experience. Can't just 'study' a tech to get it - can't just study 'Early war experience' - you have to live it first!
...I think I'm wacked on 1.02, time for bed!
