Truthfully, Paradox could release the game without Germany as a playable faction and 97% of customers would purchase the game and buy the "Deutschland DLC" a month later. Unless there's overwhelming solidarity, a few dozen not buying the game because Paradox is making intentionally greedy decisions won't change anything.

We have amazing artists here in the community, so I wouldn't bother with the model pack at full price. (Hopefully steam re-add the mod selling function, so artists like Vonboe can be rewarded for their time.. if they want)

I don't think comparing a major nation's playability to cosmetic DLC is a fair comparison.
If ANY nation were unplayable (not unbalanced or boring, but locked from the user), it would be a reason for many people not to purchase; I'll probably never play as Bhutan or Albania (not my cup of tea), but in my opinion, that's completely different than a bit of flavor.

Okay, you want to argue semantics? That's fine.

I'm not buying a house if the tile work isn't done. That means if there's one tile missing in the bathroom or the entire kitchen isn't tiled. When I pay for something, I expect that value of the money I'm exchanging for the product isn't devalued in that exchange. They pushed the game back and these are the corners they've cut? It's uncharacteristic of a normally phenomenal company and speaks more to companies like EA (and their Star Wars: Battlefront debacle) and CA (You have to Pre-Order Warhammer: Total War to get the Chaos faction..).

What that tells me is they see an opportunity to make additional cash based on the premise that you are going to buy it, otherwise they wouldn't do it.

It's on the premise that you could buy it, or otherwise they'd jack up the base price and include it in the base game. Paradox is charging less than the average game these days for HoI4, I really can't complain.

I really like what the artists have done with this game. But having said that, I have to admit that I'm pretty disappointed here. Didn't they have an extra 1.5 years to get these things done? Yeah, I'm just not really buying that any time constraints were a factor here at all.

I can kinda understand why the art for the navy is...less than optimal. Think of it like this; each ship is pretty much unique, they are all named, wheras tanks are mass produced.

Yeeaah, but they have images of most - if not all of the ship classes. They are called photographs, and have served just fine in previous HOI games. There is NO excuse for not having at least 2d images; even if they had to put in photos as placeholders they DO have them. I love Paradox, but I love my navies too, and I have to say, this is a shoddy poor show.

Ships of the same class are usually more or less identical. I understand what you mean though. They could have done some of the more well known ones at least and filled the rest in later. I just read the latest diary and in it, Podcat says the artists were left underused back when the game was first delayed. I just don't get it.

And then you have the weird ones, like the passenger liners converted into carriers. But, yeah, i would have liked to have it, but gameplay trumps everything else.

A house is never finished. It needs repairs, it needs to be remodeled as time goes on, it needs replacements for old appliances. To continue the analogy, cosmetic DLC released at launch is like the gardener being permantently attached to the reconstruction of a dilapidated building. You pay the gardener to put in some trees and bushes, and it's relatively cheap. Since remaking the garden from scratch is relatively easy compared to refitting the building with new pipes and wiring, the gardener finishes very quickly, while the building is still being refurbished. The gardener did everything that was asked by you, but has nothing to do for the next 8 months or so. So the construction manager approaches you and says that, for an additional sum of money, he can keep working, putting in flowers and various statues. That is to say, there was a certain amount of work that was designed to be put into the game. That includes just a handful of models, no unique ones. If you want more than what was designed to be in the game, you can have it, you just have to pay for it.

Part of the HOI4 vision from the beginning was to make it much more aesthetically pleasing than the rest of the series. So IMO your analogy would have been a brand new house designed from the ground up to look better than any other house on the block. Three weeks before you move into your new house, you go to look at it and the gardener has only done half of the landscape work. Then you come to find out he is content with only half of the yard being done. So you can either buy the new house anyway and hope he comes back to finish the job(On your dime) or you can finish the work yourself(If you're a good artist and know how to mod).

The base game is more aesthetically pleasing than the rest of the series, though. There's no evidence that unique models were a part of the original design and were taken out specifically to be sold as DLC.

Ships of the same class are usually more or less identical.
Not sure what you mean here. If it's that e.g. all cruisers of Mogami class look like one another, then it's fairly accurate, but they all look different than Furutaka class cruisers, let alone cruisers of other nations. In this sense it's no different from planes and tanks (all T-34 may look more or less the same, but they're pretty different from M4 Shermans) and the planes and tanks in the game do get different graphics. As such having ships from all nations receive the same picture per class is pretty weak.

as quick refence, various ww2 ship classes from three different nations. Should be easy to notice they're far from identical in appearance.

If time was a concern element for the naval 2d or any 2d then they should have promised it as later free patch content not throw it in with dlc. After all they made a big deal of taking away photos and if they aren't going to replace them with accurate artwork then to me the game got downgraded from its predecessors. Well, if that is the case, then I think I made my decision. I won't even buy the cadet version for now. Ill stick with dh and hoi3.

By what Podcat said, time was not the issue...

When we posponed HOI4 release it was mostly a question of getting more time for programmers to fix bugs, which left our scripters and artists a little underused.

Nothing was taken away. It was never there in the first place. HoI4 is not built off of HoI3; it's a different game, built roughly from scratch.

So you're saying, that PDX team cleaned their discs, used neuralyzers from Men in Black on themselves and start digging for data again? I don't think so.

No, but they were never in the game in the first place. How could they be taken out if they were never there?

if you like unique cosmetics its a lot of models for $10. you get seven heavy cruisers and 40 tank models. so 47 models. Which works out to be about 20 cents per model.

if you don't like cosmetics, then its not worth it.

i went all the way for Field Marshal because i wanted the expansion pass, which comes with the tanks too. but if Field Marshal wasnt available i still would have grabbed Colonel edition for the models. i like more models

You're right, what Paradox is doing is a travesty and sticking with HOI3 will show them. After all it's not like HOI3 ever tried to make extra bucks by selling unit artwork DLC, replacing initial generic graphics.
