Tanistry goes wrong

First time I play with Tanisry and now this happens:

So what is the problem? I am not voting for this kid and my life is soon over.

"Prefer" does not mean "will always do". They're also more likely to vote for someone outside your immediate family, say some distant kin, so that might be why they're going for the child.

I have enough experience with CKII that rules are not absolute but a 4 year old with absolutely no traits, claims or what ever is rather strange.

I'm not entirely sure why some of them don't like the second one, Earl Gilla-Crist has good traits except for arbitrary. Arbitrary alone I wouldn't think would make them go for a 4 year old over a 33 year old. Though from a vassal standpoint an arbitrary liege could be viewed as just as bad a liege with cancer.

If he had a trait I could see them going for a 4 year old, but you're right it is rather odd.

The opinion of me is right mixed. My heir only has the base Personal Diplomacy +15 and of some Same Dynasty +5 of every one able to vote.

Welcome to the main downside of tanistry.

On one hand, it combines the advantages of elected and seniority successions (also, it makes tribal government less horrible). On the other hand, better start praying to RNGsus because from now on kingship is decided by the dice roll!

Actually, I thought that was the symbol for leprosy, but I'm not sure.

I am sure, though, that he's a master seducer, so there's a good chance that he's ticked off a lot of the voters by cuckolding them.

Despite hundreds of hours in the game, I've never actually used Tanistry or Elective (closest that I've gotten was Merchant Republic and Tribal, I've definitely played Venice more than any other Catholic title). If not-your-preferred heir gets picked, which character do you play?
