After being killed in Austria, I now go to Portugal, which was my other choice, but outvoted. This AAR will be more peaceful than Austria. I shall only fight wars if someone else declares it. Same game version as before. Update tomorrow morning.

January first, one thousand four hundred and ninety-two

Captains Log

We have been sent down the coast of Africa again. The king, Joao, is very happy that we have so little to explore before we have knowledge of all of the African coast, and, therefore, a very good route to India. Portugal shall finally break the monopoly those heretical Muslims have on Indian goods. Our nation will be remembered forever, and we all will become as rich as Croesus.
Cabral

From Our Most Royal Majesty, to Corte Real G.
Greetings.
We have suspicions that Spain is exploring to the west. We do not believe there is a viable way to Asia in that direction, but we do not want to take that chance and let Spain take all the profit. Therefore, We are sending you on an expedition to the west, to see what can be found. You will be leaving immediately, I presume.

Our Majesty, Joao.

May 20, 1492
Dear Diary,
Well, off I go to the Hanseatic League. I can’t believe Father sent me off to such a cold place to be married, and to such an ugly man. I would run off by myself, but it’s so cold! Anyway I would be so far from home if I did that. Why couldn’t I have married the nice fellow from Spain, that Don Pablo? He was wonderful, so handsome and courteous, I would vastly prefer him. And Father is trying to butter up the Spanish king, so he can get into an alliance to protect our nation. Don Pablo was splendid in the way he accepted to take the gift to his king. *sighs * I haven’t even been told what my future husbands name is, which shows how much worse he is. Oh, he is calling me to his bedroom. I hope he doesn’t want more of last night.
Isabel

From Corte Reals Captains Log
July 28th, 1492
All the signs show that there is land near, but not near enough to land on without running out of food on the way back. There is also the risk that this land is desert, like in our province of Tangiers. I shall call this area of the sea the coast of Carolina, because one of my men is named Carlos, and he asked to have something named after him.

Captains Log on Diaz’ expedition

We are at the tip of Africa, and shall shortly map the stretch of ocean around Africa we do not have mapped yet. We have discovered two provinces at the tip, which I call Karoo, and the other Ciskei, because I like the sounds. I have left a few men to try and set up colonies. As soon as I map the last bit of ocean, I will return to Cape Verde.
March 2nd, 1493

Dear Joao,
The nation of Spain would like to invite you to join our alliance, which comprises the nations of Spain, England, Milan, Naples, and Lorraine. We do this because we hold you in the highest regard, and would not like to see you attacked by the heathen Moroccans. Please reply as soon as possible, that we might know your will.
Sincerely,
Ferdinand.

Dear Ferdinand,
I would be quite happy to join your alliance. I shall be certain to help you in any wars you happen to be in.
Happily,
Joao.

Diaz’ Captains Log
December 1494

I am exploring some more around Africa, off the southeast coast. I discovered that I left too many men and not enough food in Ciskei and Karoo, so I am trying again with fewer men. I shall go back to Cape Verde after exploring a bit.

December 30th, 1494
I, King Joao of Portugal, leave the kingdom to my son, Manuel. I leave my…(more in will, but irrelevant.)
(signed) King Joao

From Manuel’s journal.
January 1st, ’95.

Father died last night. Country grief-stricken. Man named Cabral insists on going around Africa, exploring sea, to forget. Da Gama finally ready to explore western continent, to north. Am going to Fathers grave now.

Corte Real G. Captains Log
January 5th
I have found land to the west. It is a peninsula, which I have called Seminole. The natives are too fierce for us to start a colony, though.

Cabral’s Log, November ’95
I have discovered more provinces in South Africa. I named them Namaqua, and Table. I sent a message to the capital asking for colonists here, and they will probably be sent. Table could have a nice harbor if people set up docks.

From Martim Gomez’ Journal
We have gotten to table, and have set up a colony. We have not seen or heard either Cabral or Diaz, though. I have heard that Da Gama is going to use this colony as a base to look for them. I also heard that Corte Real discovered an area of sea to the west with a large island, and a smaller island. The smaller island, called jamoico, or something, and the parts of the big island called Moron, and Guantanomo, are colonised by the Spanish. The other part, called Havana, has had a failed colony attempt on it by our nation.

Camoens Journal (discovered March 5th, 1956)

January 1st
I have organized a troop of men to explore with me in Africa. A very good friend of mine in the navy has agreed to bring me down there.

February 7th
I have reached Africa, and I am arching down the coast. My goal is to reach Table.

March 1st
I have reached Nouakchott. The natives are extremely dangerous, and don’t like anyone with different coloured skin. I am sure they will attack us. In fact, I think I hear something now.

The journal ends hear. Camoens presumably died here, as there is also evidence of a battle between Europeans and native Africans in the vicinity. –Editor.

J. Passeportout, I have read your Austria AAR, but found myself too lazy to reply. This one sounds like it is going to be very interesting, as I don't recall seeing any diary/letter AARs in a long time. Also the fact that your playing Portugal should make it much more based on colonisation and diplomacy, and we have too many military AARs (including my own).

Good luck with Portugal.

Thanks. Portugal was the first country I played when I got the game. I made the mistake of fighting wars with Spain and Morocco without building armies. I definitely won't do that this time, since I'm in an alliance with Spain.

Affonso: I said, I’m going to rule France.
Francisco: Ha! That’s as likely as Portugal setting up a colony in India.

From His Holiness the Pope to King Manuel of Portugal

I have the Treaty. Ferdinand has said he’ll sign it when you get here. If you aren’t here in Rome by August, Spain gets everything.

Da Gama’s Log book

October 12th

I have discovered a large island to the east of Africa. The Natives call it Madagascar. I am leaving some men at each extremity of the island, one group lead by Gomez Da Tables, and the other by Da Juego.

From Corte Real G. Log book

Christmas, ’98

We have found a province in the west called Cartagena. We shall celebrate Christmas by setting up a colony here, and putting to port.

From Manuel’s Journal
January 1st, 1500
Some fellows came to me today wanting to explore. One of them, Corte Real S., I outfitted with a ship and sent to Cape Verde with the instructions to map a new route across the Atlantic to the Americas. I sent the other, Almeida, to Cartagena, to explore south along the coast to where he expected Corte Real S. to show up. I also sent a message with him to Corte Real G. to do the same on the water, and then to open a shorter route from Cartagena to the Middle Passage that goes to Florida.

Dear Sir,
We at the War Office would like to thank you for your contribution of 318 ducats for use by the army. We have bought new equipment and trained our soldiers better. Thank you again.
The men at the War Office

From History of explorations

…And in June of 1500, Vasco Da Gama discovered the Seychelles, and there was an island there that he did not have time to explore thoroughly, and he went back to Table.

From Corte Real S. Log book

November 26th, 1501

I’ve found some land called Tirucambu by the natives. I’m leaving ten men to establish a trading post here.
Morris, the foreign fellow, was acting up, and got fifty lashes. He nearly pushed a man overboard.

From Almeida’s Journal

November 6th, 1502

I got back to Tirucambu this morning, and found only dead bodies. I ordered a search of the building and grounds, and we found nine bodies. On the ninth body was a note. It said
“Natives attacking. Have killed all except Arrez, me, and Henris, whom they kidnapped. Arrez injured badly. I am barely fendi”
The rest was blotted out with blood. My men and I went looking for the natives, and saw them roasting Henris. I ordered a charge into the native village, and we killed all the natives. Then we burned their houses down, and tossed the Indian bodies into the ocean. I noticed shark fins some time later. I conducted the funeral for the men from the trading post, and left ten of my men to replace them.

May 9th, 1504

Dear Ferdinand.
I notice that our alliance has run out, and I send this letter in hopes that you will rejoin. I have sent similar letters to the kings of England and Scotland. I look forward to your reply.
Manuel of Portugal

Dear King Manuel.
We have found the province of Panama, and ask you if you will colonise it.
Sincerely, the people of Cartagena.

From the Journal of Affonso Da Verazon

May 29th, 1504

We have arrived in Recife. The others appointed me temporary leader, until the colony gets to a large enough size for the government to have a direct hand in our domestic affairs. We have set up working docks, and Corte Real G. has made our colony his base for explorations. He is trying to map the coast of this continent, and find a way to the only good port in the Panama Ithsmus, which is on the western side of that province. I have also heard that Da Gama is going to try mapping a rout from the tip of Africa to South America, by way of the south Atlantic. That will be a boon for the shipping industry.

From the Log of Corte Real G.

I have found another good port, further south than Recife, called Santa Cruz. I must get back to Recife to send a letter asking for colonists there.

From a Colonist’s Journal*
October ’07

We have gotten to Mahe, and have set up the port workings. We have been told the colony will be a base to get to India.

Dear King Manuel
Here is 200 Ducats to subsidize your colony building and nobleman-making.
Sincerely,
Mr. Vincente Sorino

Dear Lord Vincente Sorino
Thanks for the money. I’m making you a count.
King Manuel

From the Journal of a rich Panama planter

October 1st, 1508

Natives attacked us yesterday, and no one was killed but natives. That fool Enez and his foolish followers left the colony, though. We only have 43 men now.

…And in 1509 Correos came to Tago, and wished to explore, but he had to wait for the fleet to come from Table. And in 1510 Albuquerque outfitted his own boat, and went to explore the Caribbean.

Thanks CP. You should have seen my notes for the first 4 years. A page and a half. In my austria one it took fifteen years to get that much.

From Da Gama’s log book
July 3rd, 1510

Da Gama died this morning, at 8:30. I, Affonso Petro, am now captain since I was 2nd in command before. Da Gama was a good man. I remember he once
I’m sorry. I cannot continue on this subject without breaking down and sobbing. I shall simply note that commands from the king are to stay at Table if Da Gama dies.

From Almeida’s Journal
August 26th, 1510

I have discovered something incredibly amazing. There is an organised nation in South America, something more than the petty tribes I have been seeing. I am not sure how large it is, since I have only seen the southern part, but still. They are called the Incas. I

From Joao Madriga’s Journal

October 22nd, 1510

We left Tago this morning for St. Martin. We are going to set up a colony. This is going to be great.

Copy of the 1512 Minister Conference

Manuel: Mr. Garzo, what was your budget for last month, en toto. Upkeep of the horses, pay, armor, everything added together?
Garzo: [glances at paper in front of him] 4 ducats, Your Majesty.
Manuel: That seems a bit higher than I’ve been told you could use. Is it possible to cut costs at all?
Garzo: Well, it’s possible to, theoretically at least, to cut to 2 Ducats, but I would…
Manuel: Cut it to 2 then. If a war breaks out we will, naturally, raise budget, but in times of peace I find it unnecessary. Mr. Morrez, same question.
Morrez: 2 Ducats, Sir.
Manuel: Cut it if possible. Mr. Gomez, what is our, if you excuse the expression, net profit after monthly taxes are in, and we have deducted Military and Naval maintenance that Garzo and Morrez are now taking, and other expenses?
Gomez: [writes figures on a scrap of paper] 1.4 Ducats per month. If we stop giving the grants to the scientists, we can get 2 Ducats a month.
Manuel: Cut the grants then. We need money for colonies. I don’t like that Vinchy fellow anyway. I want him sent back to Italy. Mr. Fendes, what are we doing in the way of colonies?
Fendes: I’ve sent Correos to an island in the Indian Ocean, for a stepping stone to India. After he maps the island, we will colonise it. Corte Real G. is exploring up the west South American coast, to facilitate traffic in the port in the Panama ithsmus.
Manuel: What then?
Fendes: Um… we will explore the pacific more thoroughly.
Manuel: Good. Corte Real G., he’s getting on in years, isn’t he?
Fendes: We don’t expect him to die soon.
Manuel: Mr. Mendez, have we information from our spy in Spain?
Mendez: Not much. No maps yet. It looks like a war is looming with France.
Manuel: The Spanish haven’t noticed him?
Mendez: No. We are on the best of terms.
Manuel: See if you can pinpoint the day the war will begin. All dismissed.

February 13th, 1513

My dear Manuel
I send this letter in hopes that you will join me in my war against the despicable French. I am afraid that the English Ambassador outright refused to have his country join, but Scotland is in. Good day,
Ferdinand.

Noran: Hail, boys, here they come,
the Muslims of Algiers,
here to Tangiers.

Chorus
All: Fight those Muslims off,
Kill them all,
We Tangerians are killing off the Algerians.
Noran: Fight bravely,
boys, fight them all,
and go to the death if you don’t.
Chorus

To His Majesty

I have gotten Spain’s maps. Note the Aztec Empire in North America, and the several Middle Eastern nations. They are named on the map, but I will repeat them here: Nubia, The Hadjaz, Oman, and Aden.

The maps are in the National Portuguese Museum, but are too fragile to have their pictures taken- Editor

Dear Manuel
The war is over. I accepted peace, ceding Franche-Comte to France.

Dear Ferdinand
Thanks a lot. All I get is my Tangiers army destroyed by the Poles. No hard feelings though.
