Captains Log
We have been sent down the coast of Africa again. The king, Joao, is very happy that we have so little to explore before we have knowledge of all of the African coast, and, therefore, a very good route to India. Portugal shall finally break the monopoly those heretical Muslims have on Indian goods. Our nation will be remembered forever, and we all will become as rich as Croesus.
Cabral
From Our Most Royal Majesty, to Corte Real G.
Greetings.
We have suspicions that Spain is exploring to the west. We do not believe there is a viable way to Asia in that direction, but we do not want to take that chance and let Spain take all the profit. Therefore, We are sending you on an expedition to the west, to see what can be found. You will be leaving immediately, I presume.
Our Majesty, Joao.

Dear Diary,
Well, off I go to the Hanseatic League. I can’t believe Father sent me off to such a cold place to be married, and to such an ugly man. I would run off by myself, but it’s so cold! Anyway I would be so far from home if I did that. Why couldn’t I have married the nice fellow from Spain, that Don Pablo? He was wonderful, so handsome and courteous, I would vastly prefer him. And Father is trying to butter up the Spanish king, so he can get into an alliance to protect our nation. Don Pablo was splendid in the way he accepted to take the gift to his king. *sighs * I haven’t even been told what my future husbands name is, which shows how much worse he is. Oh, he is calling me to his bedroom. I hope he doesn’t want more of last night.

From Corte Reals Captains Log
July 28th, 1492
All the signs show that there is land near, but not near enough to land on without running out of food on the way back. There is also the risk that this land is desert, like in our province of Tangiers. I shall call this area of the sea the coast of Carolina, because one of my men is named Carlos, and he asked to have something named after him.
Captains Log on Diaz’ expedition
We are at the tip of Africa, and shall shortly map the stretch of ocean around Africa we do not have mapped yet. We have discovered two provinces at the tip, which I call Karoo, and the other Ciskei, because I like the sounds. I have left a few men to try and set up colonies. As soon as I map the last bit of ocean, I will return to Cape Verde.
March 2nd, 1493
Dear Joao,
The nation of Spain would like to invite you to join our alliance, which comprises the nations of Spain, England, Milan, Naples, and Lorraine. We do this because we hold you in the highest regard, and would not like to see you attacked by the heathen Moroccans. Please reply as soon as possible, that we might know your will.
Sincerely,
Ferdinand.
Dear Ferdinand,
I would be quite happy to join your alliance. I shall be certain to help you in any wars you happen to be in.
Happily,
Joao.
Diaz’ Captains Log
December 1494
I am exploring some more around Africa, off the southeast coast. I discovered that I left too many men and not enough food in Ciskei and Karoo, so I am trying again with fewer men. I shall go back to Cape Verde after exploring a bit.
December 30th, 1494
I, King Joao of Portugal, leave the kingdom to my son, Manuel. I leave my…(more in will, but irrelevant.)
(signed) King Joao
From Manuel’s journal.
January 1st, ’95.
Father died last night. Country grief-stricken. Man named Cabral insists on going around Africa, exploring sea, to forget. Da Gama finally ready to explore western continent, to north. Am going to Fathers grave now.
Corte Real G. Captains Log
January 5th
I have found land to the west. It is a peninsula, which I have called Seminole. The natives are too fierce for us to start a colony, though.
Cabral’s Log, November ’95
I have discovered more provinces in South Africa. I named them Namaqua, and Table. I sent a message to the capital asking for colonists here, and they will probably be sent. Table could have a nice harbor if people set up docks.
From Martim Gomez’ Journal
We have gotten to table, and have set up a colony. We have not seen or heard either Cabral or Diaz, though. I have heard that Da Gama is going to use this colony as a base to look for them. I also heard that Corte Real discovered an area of sea to the west with a large island, and a smaller island. The smaller island, called jamoico, or something, and the parts of the big island called Moron, and Guantanomo, are colonised by the Spanish. The other part, called Havana, has had a failed colony attempt on it by our nation.
Camoens Journal (discovered March 5th, 1956)
January 1st
I have organized a troop of men to explore with me in Africa. A very good friend of mine in the navy has agreed to bring me down there.
February 7th
I have reached Africa, and I am arching down the coast. My goal is to reach Table.
March 1st
I have reached Nouakchott. The natives are extremely dangerous, and don’t like anyone with different coloured skin. I am sure they will attack us. In fact, I think I hear something now.
The journal ends hear. Camoens presumably died here, as there is also evidence of a battle between Europeans and native Africans in the vicinity. –Editor.
