Tag changing (change_tag = XXX) is very buggy. This also includes civil wars, as when the rebels win in a civil war, they change tag to the original country. This is a list of all the bugs I've noticed with it, but I'm sure there's more:
1) home_country isn't updated on any of your characters. If you for instance changed from ARV (Arverni) to GAU (Gaul), your characters will continue to have ARV as their home country. This breaks any foreign emissaries you have sent out, causing them to get stuck in the country you sent them to because their home_country no longer exists.
2) All your trade routes are immediately cut upon changing tag, presumably because the game thinks that a foreign occupier took over the province. This includes internal routes.
3) In a Republic, switching tags causes an instant 20% years of peace due to the fact that the new tag obviously hasn't been at war (since it didn't exist...)
