I must echo the sentiments of others on this board, that I am eagerly anticipating the arrival of EU in the States. I'm a huge fan of the Imperialism series, and it appears that EU may start where these games stopped. A couple of questions for those in the know. How are the tactical battles handled? In the Imp series it was rather simplistic and not very realistic (to say the least). Secondly, what is the approximate date for release in North America. I know first quarter 2000 has been given as the release date, but I'm hoping it's closer to mid-1st Quarter than late 1st-Quarter. Thanks.

There are no tactical battles at all. It would be impossible to handle. To reflect it correctly you would have to do a mini NiR for each battle.

In this game you have 100.000 on each side. Otoh the battles seem much more realistic than the Imp ones. Btw I only used strategic battles there too.

Hmmm...100,000 on each side? Does this mean each of your 'armies' are 100,000 strong? Is there a CRT that would allow you to determine if you had a reasonable chance of success? Would your 'army' ever have less than 100,000? How does this work with sieges? How are the naval engagements handled? I apolgize for the multitude of questions, but 'inquiring minds want to know'.

It can be depending on country. Minor countries have smaller armies. 100.000 is actually a very large army in EU. Most of the battles are 30-60.000 size.

Your chances are determined on the army quality. You have different values that determine your army quality in the different stages of a battle (shock, fire and melee).

Sieges are resolved in two ways. Either you assault and take huge losses or you wait for 3-12 months depending on your size vs the city size. Large forts are very hard to take.

You buy in trops by the thousends, and when they are in battle or getting fatigue they die one by one, lonely as they are.

In Europe you often have large armies like Marcus said, but when going out in colonial warfare it is a while different story. In America you can easily get around with 500 - 1000 soldiers. I scouted the whole of Northern America with two 500 men strong Swedish 'armies'. In the east it is harder though since they have much higher number of natives, and they are more skilled. I guess I don't have to explain why on a forum like this.

Keep hearing about the battles but we haven't really had any info from the developers on this subject, no screenshots, nothing at all. It's been ages since they updated this page, others updated almost every 4-5 days 2-3 months before release of the game. I hope updates increase, information and screenshots included .. aswell as various in game movies (not just intro) aswell as a pre-release demo.

In the information piece about the makeup of the forces, it mentions infantry, cavalry, and artillery. Do you have the flexibility to say, make and all-cavalry force? Does combined arms give you any kind of bonus? Is it expensive to raise and maintain an army of say 100,000? How does the resolution of the conflict take place? Is it just a screen that says 'You are victorious!', and then give a breakdown of losses? Thanks in advance for the answers.

Sapura;

Thanks for the feedback. I frequently check in at that forum, but I don't recall seeing any explanation about how the conflicts (battles) are resolved, the force makeup of your army, whether certain territories can recrutit cavalry, while others are more suitable for infantry, etc. I know wars are just a violent offshoot of diplomacy, but it would be helpful to understand how these wars are resolved, and the tactical battles that make up those wars.

The battle is a screen that opens if you click on the armies that are commited in battle. Then you will in real time (pause always works through out the game) see how the battle goes and how your poor army declines. Of cause you can retreat from a battle before your army breaks, or if the losses seems to go wild. Since it is in real time there can be a multiple of battles at the same time (unlike in Imp). After the battle on the field (if any that is) there might be a siege or assult if the province have a fortified city. Needless to say art is very important for a fast take over.

In a game like this it would be impossible (boring as hell) to do every battle with a tactical window so don't be sorry that it is not there.

Inf, cav and art have there special attribut and yes, you could have armies of just one type if you like, and of any number. The way it works with the different categories are still being tweaked.

For the moment the recruitment is depending of the size of the city, but there will be an amount of men that can be recrouted, not that and that amount of inf or so.

I agree fully with Kullenius here. Honestly I didn't like tactical battles in Imperialism either. It just looks ridicoulous with 3 infantry units trying to storm Paris :).

This is a grand strategy game and main concern should be the long term strategy. Wars are fun but peace is what really wins you the game. The country with fewest wars are more likelly to win the game than a very aggressive conqueror. Try to win some strategic allies instead.

We are not allowed to make any screen shots for others, but on the link
http://www.europa-universalis.com/screen.asp?img=20

You can see how it probably have looked once apon a time. It have changed to nicer graphic though (even though not a revolutionary difference). Not a very exciting screen, but that is not what the game is about for one second. You will be thrilled with other stuffs that normal games don't seem to offer.

Yep, i saw that screenshot before. However as with all the other screenshots the resolution is way, way too small for me (or anyone else) to make details out. How about you beta testers tell the updaters of this web page, who are currently in hybernation :), that they should increase the res for their screenshots, otherwise its a waste of time posting anything because almost no details can be distinguished.

Smasher: There are atleast 2 or 3 threads in the EU forum concerning what you ask for. In particular there is one of me asking about 10000 questions on usenet, Marcus responding to the majority of them. This includes on military matters. The entire exercise was capped to the forum my St Leo I think that's his nick.

I am sure Johan can provide some screens if you ask nicelly Sapura :).

Later on maybe we could provide some AAR screens on sidgames.com if Paradox likes the idea. Promotion is never wrong :)

Johan, my main man.
How about giving us some high resolution screens? Pretty please? I've always loved the Swedes, they're so smart and inventive!

Marcus: Do you reckon that'll do it or should i sweeten it up a little more?
