You start out surrouned by QQ and the Timmies which both hate your guts immediately. And since the Caspian sea allows no ships you can't expand anywhere. Allying the Ottomans/Mamluks also doesn't work due to distance and religious penalties (Tabarestan is Shia). On a more positive note, you do make good money. Tabarestan dominates the Persia node.

Saving up huge amounts of cash and waiting for QQ or the Timmies to get into big trouble seems like the only "strategy" I can come up with so far.

Any ideas?

to me it sounds its the best strategy for the time being. invest some of that cash into rebel supply in timmy or QQ (too many persian cores in there u know) and pray for a wide rebellion, and dive in with regular and merc army when it starts!

just a tip, u better hope for timur himself to die soon! cos he is a damn good commander! also dont forget to fight the horde's elite cavalry in the mountains of persia.

thats all i can say from the top of my head for now ;) hope u crush them

Have you tried them out at all yet, I don't know but I think any nation that's smaller than say, 10 provinces is going to be hell to play with the new update untill they fix the rebel system.

My first try was the same :D

Tried to find an ally (otomans, golden horde, timuds, mamluks) but nobody wanted and soon after i increased relations to 100 with them all, QQ eat me :/

But well new game new chance ^_^
I had a better try when 20k Armenian rebels popped and almost destroyed QQ so I intervened, but when the 20k stack went to Georgia's Armenian province, I was caught with my pants down unfortunately. :(

Tried a quick game as these guys, at least they are super rich for a 2PM ^^

I was actually hoping to form Mughals with them, not Persia, but got too bored of waiting for something to happen.

I fired up a game as these guys to try out as my first AoW game. It's 1452, and I'm doing decently so far. I improved relations with QQ as much as I could, then gifted them 150 or so gold to get them above 100 relations, which made them neutral, so I could RM and then ally them.

I just got done with a war where I annexed Gazikumukh, but unfortunately I just realized that while the Caspian Sea works for fabricating claims, it doesn't count for coring range. So now I'm stuck with two provinces I can't core that both have huge amounts of LA and unrest. I'm going to try and work up to diplo-vassalizing Shirvan, who I could then sell the provinces to, otherwise I'll just have to pop Gazi back out as a vassal. Sucks though, as had I realized I couldn't core it myself, I would have just vassalized Gazi directly during the war. Oh well.

Tried a game earlier on, surprised that shia zealots weren't friendly with me!

But yes, would it be an idea to if the QQ or Timurids attack you, then let them win and offer yourself as a vassal, then take them apart from the inside when they get attacked by the Ottomans or Russia? Assuming you don't get diplo-annexed

Does the AI automatically turn from Hostile to Neutral if your relations are +100? I'm pretty sure I had +100 with QQ at some point, but nothing changed.

Small revel factions are getting crushed by the considerable Timurid army. Big rebel factions (like the Persian one) cost like four times your monthly income to support.

well in ur shoes, i'd pay as much as possible to persian rebels and hope the rebellion starts before someone eat me for breakfast!

Had some restarts now. The only bigger nation who wants to ally you is golden horde as it seems. That will delay an attack.

The best start i had so far was when an event poped in 1450 which increased my relations to QQ and Timurids by 60!
With this i was able to ally QQ and because it was early in the game QQ didn't ally Gazikumukh, so i was able to vassalize them and later annex them. After that i messed up and got owned by georgia+ally :D

If the event pops later or never i see no way to conquer anything, because QQ and Timurids won't give military access :/ The only way then seems to wait for a good oportunity to backstab them.

Been attempting a few approaches, assuming you survive the first few decades, I've found that releasing Persia from Gilan then feeding them the necessary cores, then diplo-annexing them to get the Form Persia decision back seems to be an alright plan

I'm about 50 years into this now, QQ has been taken apart by myself + Crimea. Fed Persia cores and vassalized the minors up north to get around coring distance. The biggest issue now is that Timurids/Ottos are allied. Any tips for how to get around this? I feel like waiting around will eventually lead to being crushed between these two superpowers...

just finished this achievment. After a few tries. I ended up with this strat

Day one.
collect from home trade node.
start befriending QQ
fabricate claim on Gazikumukh
release Persia
take mission to build fort and build it in your now only province.
national focus on military.
Hire lvl 1 military advisor. Don't hire other advisors you need the money.

after 1 year.
guarantee QQ and gift them until you get more than 100 relations. Then you will be able to marry and ally QQ.
Attack and annex Gazikumukh
after annex start fabricating on circassia and then release Gazikumukh
annex and release circassia

After this opener you play it by the ear. I was able to ally ottomans and carved my way though QQ and timmy both at the same time since timmy decided to be defender of the faith. If you manage to ally the ottomans you're basically done.

when you get all the needed corese just integrate persia and the activate the decision to form persia.

I did three attemts of this today, the second one actually worked kinda as in - i didn't get eaten and managed to ally timurids after they got protective towards me (probably because they were losing a war vs kazan and uzbek for a bit) but I had so incredibly bad luck, I decided to reset in 1470 after having achieved nothing because timmy was 1k in debt and didnt want to join any war at all. allying timurids is definitely doable sometimes though, and thats going to be the plan for now - ally timurids, beat QQ, ally ottomans - and from there we'll see.

I finished the achievement yesterday.

My strat was releasing Persia and eventually allying the Ottomans.

You can marry/ally them once they conquer their core in AQ and you get a reduced distance penalty. However, you still usually need to go all out on improving relations.
I subsidized them (4g/month or so) from the start for the +15 relations, got a +dip-rep advisor at the right time, and sent them a 300g gift (+25 relations) on top of all the normal stuff. Once they're allied, it's smooth sailing.

I also messed around with having a bunch of Marches around me, it was pretty fun.

Here's the screenshot from when I annexed Persia and got the achievement:
http://cloud-4.steampowered.com/ugc/28472540246640135/2E5F33FA0753F4758E537D1FADE6E2ED1F4C1043/

I tried the ally QQ or Timurids idea but it seemed pretty inconsistent because of the hostile relations, the Ottomans thing is reliable as long as they get the AQ province and you can get a dip-rep advisor at some point.
