I may be buying a new system soon. Is it still possible to buy single cores with a significantly higher performance that the individual cores of a dual core? In other words is it worth even considering getting a single core if one is buying a low to mid priced system?

Dual core processors don't cause much of a problem, especially since you can assign CPU affinity, it is just that they are more expensive and are more difficult to overclock because they generate so much heat, and use more power.

The Core2Duo is the sweet spot for processors right now. AMD has a decent triple core, but Intel easily has better performance right now with almost every dual core they sell right now. I recommend the E8400 3.0GHz. It runs so cool that you can overclock it to 4Ghz easy with a $35-40 air coolers.

There is no single core processor available from AMD or Intel that is actually worth purchasing. Those are now a relic of technology.

It is teh chip architecture clock speed etc etc..... that dictate teh MIP..... or instructions per second...... MIP is ultimately what is the most important.... the others are just factors that dictate the MIP....... not 1 sinlge item but the items combined

which is why you can have an older single core perform better than multi cores, program dependant

for that reason alone iw why i kept a p4 3.4ghz HT around........... well until my i7-920 4.2ghz with two gtx 295's shows up......

Stop typing "teh"! In this and other posts, this rampant typo makes what you have written practically unreadable.

I think what he means is, it's spelled t-h-e.

Let's be tolerant of others please... there may be reasons for this type of mis-spelling .....

No offense, Johan, but I'm slightly concerned with your recent high-spec game binge.

I can barely run EU3 on the minimum specs, and EU Rome is only slightly better.

What happened to the days of not caring about graphics and simply sticking to good ol' 2D maps/animations/units/etc? I understand that the AI is a huge part of your games and such, so that already takes up a massive amount of my CPU power. Adding more complex graphics just makes the game that less capable of being played.

And believe me, I LOVE playing your games. I just wish that I COULD without tonnes of lag.

And if you say anything about an expanded market, I will rage so hard you'll be able to feel it all the way in Sweden. :p

PCI-e cards have been out for over 4 years now. Most people should be able to purchase a $100 video card, add some ram and game on. If you are a gamer that wants to go beyond playing solitaire, you need to upgrade every once in a while. You can easily build or purchase a system for around $400, (without monitor) that will easily run EU3. Not sure about HOI3, but video cards are so cheap these days, it is crazy.

Laptops are more difficult, but I can't expect my laptop to run games and I don't expect everyone else to suffer old school 2D map graphics that look like they are straight from 1992 just because I wanted to run a game on MY laptop. I'll just save some money and buy a desktop. Not too expensive, and plenty of time to save before release.

I am also pretty sure that the CPU handles all AI, so when they add 3D graphics, the video card will make the biggest difference if your CPU already handled HOI 2.

When you're sixteen and your parents are stingy and the job market is shot, it's kind of hard to upgrade your computer... = /

When I was your age my parents were also stingy, so in order to buy anything expensive (Stereos, C64 games etc.) I went and washed Glasses & Plates at a local Bar. The money was rubish but since I didn't have any expenditures I was able to save all of it. Ask around your area if any of the places needs anything done.
You can get a decent GraKa for around €100 which will surpass any requirement which HOI3 might have.

if u have an old rig, this not everyone else fault, since the required system specs that was given are the bare minimum.

2GB memory and 256MB card with shader 2.0 !?!?!?
there is nothing lower than those specs (unlees u want to play flash games)

1GB of memory can be bought 13$
every video card that is sold today comes with 256MB memory shader 2 support which can be found even at 50$

with those specs in mind u can build a new pc at 280$ (dual core) an our prices with all the taxes are way higher than in the USA

so getting a game with specs that will fit any mid range 4 year old pc its great news!
on the other hand, great AI and game complexity is factor of how much info can be processed...

so the the lower the system specs the devs are aiming for
the lower the game will be able to give you...

so they can make HOI3 for really old rigs, bet i am not sure how good will it actually be...

I get the minimum system requirements but I would like the recommended minimum I am going to get this game for my gaming PC which will have no problem running it, but I am also thinking about buying a netbook specifically the asus N10j-A2 and the only thing of concern is the single core Intel Atom processor might not be enough.

probably not, u can say that the atom is equivalent to same clock celeron

your probably correct, but all we can do is speculate without the specs in front of us. since EU3:VV was 1.9 GHz Processor it dont look good.

Does any on know of a net book tht is going to do the job in the same price rnge as the asus n10j-a2?

would there be any options to reduce the load on the cpu?

In EU3 there were options such as simple water and no trees, plus people released streamlined versions of the map (see ToT, &c.) which seem to play faster for a lot of people.
