I missed the part about EU3 lagging - that's bad already, HOI3 will be much worse. I upgraded my laptop recently from 512 to 2 GB memory, very reasonable price and I expect it will be my main HOI3 platform until I upgrade my older desktop pc. So yes see if you can at least get 1 GB total ram, 2 GB would be much better. But again the demo first, see how it runs.

I'm still undecided on either buying a new PC, or upgrading my current RAM.
This is for 200€
AMD ATHLON 64 LE-1640 2.7GHz
2 Gb RAM
1 Tb Harddrive
GEFORCE 8100 512MB Video card

I, for one, have a very little knowledge of computer specs. Anyone can tell me if this is a good bargain ? Or should I just buy some RAM for my laptop, with specs mentioned above.

Other than the ram, the laptop you have is better than that crap. Avoid.

As said, your machine is just fine if it only got a little more room. If it is a brand laptop, post it's exact name we'll figure out the right memory for you.

If not, get cpu-z: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php and post a screenshot of the memory screen.

If it has a Core 2 processor, then it must use DDR2, because Core 2 processors only have a DDR2 memory controller. Anyway, better safe than sorry, so I still recommend checking CPU-Z.
These days, DDR2 is dead cheap, so it shouldn't be too hard to get 2 GB.

If it runs EU3, it'll run HOI3. However, if it lags like hell with EU3, it'll lag worse with HOI3, in all likelihood it'll prove unplayable.

Quadrupling the RAM is not a bad idea, DDR2 is so cheap it isn't funny anymore and it'll do good things for your overall performance.

Demo's likely to be half a gigabyte alone. Is your net capped or simply slow? Even a 256kbit connection can probably get the demo given a night to do it.

I'd suggest losing all hope and buying a new machine. Based on what the manual says about HOI3 needing 2GB to install and taking a few minutes to load... I would not keep my hopes high.

I got a core2duo with 2gb ram yet I cannot play Magna Mundi for EU3 normally.

Just get another 512MB stick or more if needed, that is one of the few parts on notebook that can be upgraded and doesn't cost that much.

You can probably start it, I wouldn't count on an enjoyable game experience though. Even if you upgrade the RAM.

I think that HoI3 will be absolutely unplayable on this laptop although it meets the officially stated minimum requirements. These requirements practically haven't changed since EU3.

512 Mb RAM was in fact less than minimum to properly run EU:Rome and I guess it's going to be much worse with HoI3.

It's all about what is the definition of "run the game". In case of EU3 it meant "playable but lagging", in case of Rome "unplayable but able to launch". HoI3? Probably "slideshow and hardly able to launch".

Why?

The GPU should be barely enough, it's not like Clausewitz does fancy explosions. And the cpu is a core 2 duo, and at 1.66 ghz it's significantly faster than the 2.4 GHz P4 that is listed as minimum.

HOI 3 has higher minimum specs than EUIII, he has trouble running EUIII.
I think Forzaa is probably right.

@OP...it should run if you upgrade RAM. My laptop ran the beta with AMD 2 x 1.8Ghz, 2GB RAM, Geforce go 7200. It wasn't beautiful or anything, but it ran.

I played EU3 without problems on my Asus F3T (turion x2 1,8; ge-force 7600 go; ram upgraded to 2gb). Initial loading time was terrible, but the game itself ran fine. The low amount of ram is your biggest problem. Graphic card would probably handle it, if you use counters instead of sprites. Now I am worrie more about your (and mine) low processor speed. If the new weather system and other stuff will be too hard on it, we my kiss our ass*s good-bye...

Should run, but perhaps not too well with your 128MB card.
