So one thing I'm curious about but isn't a deal breaker is whether or not you can just go around systems. Do you have to fly from system to system or can you just ignore the void between stars?

It's dependant on your FTL choice. Hyperlane users can only go from a connected star to another, but the travel time is almost instant. Wormhole users need a special station but can go anywhere in its range. Warp users can go to anywhere from anywhere else but it's incredibly slow.

While the below quote technically is accurate, it's important to point out that "anywhere in it's range" means "any system in it's range" and "anywhere from anywhere" means "any system from any system as long as distance between them is not greater than max distance allowed in a single warp-jump"

The "dark space" between systems is not actually represented in-game anywhere but the galaxy map.

It's dependant on your FTL choice. Hyperlane users can only go from a connected star to another, but the travel time is almost instant. Wormhole users need a special station but can go anywhere in its range. Warp users can go to anywhere from anywhere else but it's incredibly slow.

So there's no such thing as fortress systems unless every single player chooses to use Hyperlanes. That kinda sucks, since I like the idea of Legend of the Galatic Heroes style lanes of attack. Oh well, thanks.

Keep in mind that you can enforce a single style of FTL in game creation. So if you want a game where everyone is using Hyperlane FTL, then you can do that.

You can restrict the galaxy to use only one FTL type during campaign setup, and there are modules for military bases that forces enemies to "arrive" in it's range, so that can still technically be done

Fortifying a system is still a valid strategy against hyperdrive races. If you can determine where the hyperlane is, you can potentially block a choke point and prevent then AI from advancing. You would just need to keep close watch to find the hyperlanes, or research hyperlanes yourself.
