Syphilitic?

I know that's one theory about the dissemination of syphillis, but I don't know if that's been verified as the only one. I seem to recall reading that Hippocrates in ancient Greece described syphillitic symptoms, meaning that the disease was extant in europe before Columbus, but it was misrecognized.
