Well there isn't really a disadvantage expect the oppurtunity cost of the AP. As it stands you certainly don't want to do the project at the moment as it's bugged and won't let your synths be rulers.

Ouch, that's a nasty bug! And then there's the necessary prep work for transitioning from food + energy pop upkeep to just energy upkeep. Does the special project convert farm district slots to generator district slots?

No it doesn't but you get the "Bioreactor" building.

Also I was able to componsate completely for the transition by setting up a monthly market order.

So you gain the ability to build bio-reactors as a non-Machine Intelligence? I guess that does make sense.

The wiki Buildings and Technology pages really need updating :-(

When I did the special project, my resources went up significantly. A monthly order to trade food easily overcompensated the energy loss.
I drowned in consumer goods. However, as a mechanist empire, I probably greatly profited from the reduced upkeep.
That, and that all pops get the 10% production bonus to everything.
Pop growth with migration treaties and assimilation right is as insane as xeno-compatibility and clone vats:
10/month assembled in sector capitals + 5/month from immigration, more on an ecumenopolis.
Only thing annoying is that pops that are currently assimilated are shown as unemployed.
And choosing your the biological robot model seems to be bugged and planets build whatever they feel like.

Hmm... I think my synths were in servitude before I finished the project, now I don't even have the option to change the policy anymore though :/

Also they don't say they are in servitude but have full citizen rights.

It is a general empire law and disappears when the project is finished. If you finished the ascension project before you changed the law and cannot revert to a previous save, you are more or less screwed. You can still use other species as rulers, though.
