It is indeed inspired by the sabre strap of cavalrymen, which by the Napoleonic period was partially a practical accoutrement, and partially a decorative symbol of the branch. Infantry commonly wore crossed straps, hence the "X", the symbol for artillery is a pretty straightforward stylized cannonball, etc.
