There is a problem with my sword attacking. Before, my sword attacked in all directions and now, for some reason, it will only attack in a thrust move. I am getting the S#@t beated out of me so can someone help me here?

I only use non-thrusting swords i.e. saber, cleaver
In battle you have to use your mouse to control the direction of your swing, I found that to be a pain, default is thrust it seems

Check the sword statistics, not all swords are capable of swinging (and conversely, not all swinging swords are capable of being thrust). It should list the attacks possible, if you don't see swing then you can't swing the sword. A fair few swords are thrust only; by the period the game is set in you're looking at rapier and similar style swords as the main fencing weapon.
Thrusting only swords are common in fire and sword, they are pretty fast mind you. Make sure you check whether it can swing or not while selecting weapons.
