Hello everyone,

I just switched from Catholic to Cathar.
My question is: how do I 'convince' my vassals to convert? I tried the 'demand conversion' option but it only worked on a few of them, the majority doesn't like me enough. I tried to place my court chaplain on a province as well but by the look of it it is going to take years for him to convert my vassal.
What other realistic options do I have? Shall I just wait for my vassals to die or rebel in order to imprison them and force conversion?

Landed characters need 35+ opinion to accept demand religious conversion and can be only done in peace. Gift and award honorary titles to those who are close. Your other options are: who you can imprison tyranny-free, go for it, once he is in prison he cant refuse conversion. And the chaplain works too if you have the time for it but it is way too slow.

Have you chancellor stir up trouble for your more troublesome vassals - incite them to treason then you can either arrest them or let them rebel and seize their lands from them once you win.

And depending on how many heirs they have until their lands pass into yours, assassination is another option. There's always proselytize, but as Gans remarked, it's slow going.

You can get the opinion up by sending a gift. For courtiers its 15 and goes up from there. That can get really expensive. Easiest way outside of your court is to use your Chaplin and have the proselytize. Once a vassal is your religion they will work on that province. Keep in mind you cant Demand Conversion when at war.

Depending on your laws you can also revoke Bishops and install someone of your faith and they will also convert people.

Educate heirs to titles. Here is a trick. If the vassal wont agree because of religion, find someone that is of the right religion in your court and get the ok. Then Click your self and educate child and pick the kid and then send them to someone of your religion.

Ive done the Cathor thing many times and the pitfall is that you are a heretic so all Catholics will have a CB against you. IIRC the Pope can even call a crusade against you

Imprison and release a vassal. You get +9 realm-wide bonus for a released duke and +12 for a released king. Also, make sure you do not have more than 2 duchies and you may want to change to elective succession to make some more people happy.

A more diplomatic solution, contrary to a lot of what has already been suggested, is to have your chancelor improve relations with the vassals in question, eventually you will be able to convert them once their opinion of you is high enough (I believe an opinion of 35 is sufficient). Also use stuff like gifts and honorary titles to give slight opinion boosts when you need it.

But of course, if it's possible for you to get religious title revocation law then that is a very powerful tool, letting you revoke the titles of all non-cathar vassals. Most likely the vassals in question wouldn't want to vote for this law, so it might not be a viable method for you.

For some reason that doesn't seem to be working for me. As an Orthodox King of Sicily, I was getting tyranny for revoking titles from Catholics despite having the religious revocation law enabled.
Religous revokation doesnt apply between characters of primary Christian denominations, neither does it apply for heretics of another christian branch from yours.

while, funnly enough, it does for Sunni/Shia i think, although i dont know about heretics.

I am using a mixture of:

- improving relations with my chancellor and demanding conversion once happiness is good enough (plus awarding honorary titles etc...)
- revoking titles from 'infidels' (i.e. catholics)
- imprisoning rebels and plotters and demanding conversion

Working so far! :)

Educate your vassal's heirs into the cathar religion.
When the heir converts to cathar, kill the vassal, so the cathar heir inherits, and voila : cathar vassal.

You can only revoke heretics of your religion or heathens, not other "legitimate" Christians or heretics from their faith (Bogomilist for example). So Catholics can revoke Cathars, but not Nestorians or Miaphysites.
