Swedophile needs help

I am looking for books in Fiction & Non fiction printed in English which are based around Sweden & Scandinavia,
If anyone can help me with this it would be appreciated,
I have read the first two books in the Guillou trilogy of a Swedish knight during the crusades which was a very good read
but I'm sure there must be more books covering the period from the 1300's to the end of the great northern war.
I am a Swedish history junkie, every time I go to Stockholm I end up at the Vasa , and I need some
good reading to keep me going. Again thanks for any help with this guys.

Well you could try to find "Poltava, the Rise of an Empire" or somesuch name, by Peter Englund. He has also written two other very good books, one concerning the 30 year war "Ofredsår", and one about the war of Karl X Gustav in Poland and Denmark "Den Oövervinlige", but unfortunatly I dont think they are translated into English.

Fiction:

The Charles Men by Nobel laureate Heidenstam. Collection of excellent stories about Swedish soldiers and civilians in the Great Northern War.

Non-fiction:

The Peter Englund books mentioned.

Check out the works of Michael Roberts. He has written a lot about Swedish history in your period.



Hmmm, my mind is very slow today, I'll try to think of more (there is a lot more!) but right now I have a hard time remembering what is out there and in English.

Another classic for Viking fiction is "Röde Orm"... (literally "Red Snake" no idea if it's been translated though)

Thanks for all the great tips guys, most appreciated, this will keep
me busy for a while, I'm surprised that there is not much out there
covering the 30 years war & Gustavus Adolphus.
