Sweden 1492-1532
This is the beginning of my Swedish AAR, it is rather sketchy as I did
not take any notes while playing and I am writing this to give Smurja a
taste for Swedish glory.
At the start, Sweden is a Danish vassal and the only way to break free
is to declare war on the Danes and become independent. Sweden starts out
with a reasonable army, but have techlevel 0 in all technologies. I
decided to bide my time and strenghten my country befor declalring war
upon Denmark as they are allied to Russia and a two-front war will most
likely devastate me.
= The War of Freedom =
I slowly increased my techs and strenghtened my troops and my
infrastructure before the opportunity to strike presented itself. In
1498, Denmark/Russia was at war with the Hansa and they had recently
fought a war against one of the Khanates so Russia would probably be a
little weakened, this was the chance I had waited for.
I promtly declared war on Denmark and after a bloody war against both
Russians and Danes that took over two years, I made a peace that gave me
Skåne and Jämtland from Denmark. A year later the Hansa was forced to
cede Holstein and Eastern Pommerania to Denmark.
= The Norwegian War =
In 1505 Denmark/Russia was once again engaged in a war against one of
the Khanates, so I decided to attack the Danes again. The Russians
agreed on a white peace after my Finnish Army had moved into Russia and
scared the peasants. This left Denmark alone against Sweden and I hoped
for an easy victory and huge gains. This was not to be, it took four
years of war before a peace was agreed upon and I only gained Tröndelag
from Denmark. Skåne revolted at the beginning of the war and the revolt
spread to Västergötland and Småland. I had to put out this rebellion
long after the war was over and this totally wrecked the Swedish Army as
a fighting force.
I then decided to take it slow and rebuild my country. After a couple of
years Sweden was beginning to come back from the mess the Norwegian War
put me in. During this quiet time, I was approached by the Hansa and
they asked me to join their alliance that included Brandenburg and the
Teutonic Order as well. I accepted and hoped for support in my next war
with Denmark/Russia. Unfortunately this alliance only caused me grief
and was ultimately a big Swedish fiasco.
= The Polish Alliance Wars =
Soon after joining the alliance, Poland declared war upon the Teutons
and I entered grudgingly the war on the side of my allies. I landed
troops in Kurland to join with troops that marched down from Finland to
really give the Poles a trouncing the would never forget. My army
consisted of about 20k Infantry and 30 guns. I defeated a 15k Polish
army in Kurland and started to siege the fortress, all looked good and
Brandenburg made good headway in the west. Then disaster struck, a 55k
Polish army came down on me like a ton of bricks and my army was trashed
and pursued all the way back to Finland. The Teutons made peace at this
time by handing over Memel and 250$.
After this short but bloody war Sweden again needed time to rebuild my
armies, I was down to 9k Infantry if I counted ALL my troops. It was
fortunate that Denmark was engaged in a war with France which in the end
costed them Holstein. After I had raised a decent force again, Poland
once again declared war upon the Teutons and I joined my allies. This
war was even shorter than the first and before I could say 'Hussar', the
Swedish expeditionary force was wiped out and the Teutons had
surrendered another 250$ to the Poles. What a worthless alliance I had
joined...
= 3rd Swedo-Danish War =
Gustav Vasa became king in 1521 (I think) and he brought stability and
prosperity back to the Swedes. HUGE investments were made in many
technologies and lots of troops were raised among the proud citizens
(lots of good random events triggered by a great king). After rebuilding
my army yet AGAIN, I declared war upon a lonely Denmark in 1527. Only
the Hansa honoured the alliance and they only engaged in some small
naval skirmishes during the entire war, what else did I expect from my
allies? I stomped around in Norway but the Danes were not willing to
negotiate, so I sent a small expedition to capture Eastern Pommerania. I
finally got the Danes to the peace table and recieved Eastern Pommerania
and 100$. I was delighted and hoped to expand my holdingds in Germany,
it would however dawn upon me why the Danes were so eager to give away
that particular province...
= The Pommeranian War =
After winning the 3rd Danish War, Sweden became protestant in early
1529. This gave plenty of money to raise new troops and to improve my
infrastructure and navy as well. I made a small expedition to the new
world after recieving a random explorer, but he parished before ho came
there due to several freak storms on the Atlantic. Everything looked
good and I was prepared to beat the crap out of Russia with my large and
well-trained army when Poland out of a sudden declared war to capture a
province I recently recieved from Denmark, how convenient for Denmark
that they didn't own it anymore....
My Pommeranian amry was wipped again by a huge Polish army (anyone
seeing a pattern here?) and the Polish navy made life difficult for my
reinforcements to arrive. When I left the game I had recaptured Eastern
Pommerania and had landed another army in Memel, but the Poles had
marched another HUGE army to the gates of my Pommeranian estate. They
continously refuse to settle for less than Easter Pommerania and 250$, I
would agree if they would settle for the province, but NOOO!
In the rest of the world, Austria has annexed Hungary, captured two
provinces from Venice and partitioned the Papacy with Spain. Grenada
defeat (!!) Spain and even recieved another province in the peace.
Lorraine has captured two provinces from France and Spain has captured
another. The Turks have annexed Crimea, they are busy in the Middle East
and are heading a big Islamic alliance currently at war with
Austria/Persia/Cologne. Russia has captured lots of provinces from the
Khanates and can become a big headache for me in the future, Denmark has
traded their Russian ally for an alliance with England and Portugal.
This is my first game and I have had a blast, I hope to continue this
AAR soon.
