I have always thought that Sweden's income is grossely overestimated. It was a very poor country in comparison to France and German, and in many respects the EU2 province taxes in Sweden do not represent that.

Peter Ebbesen explains it perfectly well there.. Its pretty obvious that Sweden is underpowered when you read that abysmal report.

Sweden's rise to power can only be explained by many small circumstances and a line of decent/lucky kings. Logical comparison of the economical facts and the comparison of development of the Swedish society in relation to other important countries of the era such as France and Austria, the suggested outcome would have been severely different.
How did the Mongols manage to conquer the second largest area in history within very few years? Only the circumstances and able rulers allowed them to. Thier initial economic resources were certainly not comparable to their neighbours. A weak China for the Mongols (and I assume other neighbouring states as well though I'm no expert of this situation), and a weak Russia/HRE/Poland/Denmark for Sweden I think conludes the story.
