Sweden - Democracy's last hope!

This will be a brief description of my current HOI-game (it's also my first!). If this isnt the right forum then move it I mean it's not REALLY an AAR or is it?

1936 Scenario... AI: Hard, AI-aggressiveness: Normal. Fog of war OFF until I as Sweden gets some action.

1936 - I started out as Sweden... Did some trading on the world market to get that oil and rubber. Nothing happens in the world almost...

1937 - Japan walks all over China very easily. Japan wins about 100 battles and China wins 1. Germany takes Austria. Sweden continues to build up its tech and provinces...

1938 - Japan DOW Netherlands and takes about half of Netherlands east indies until they get to some battle on a small island they cant win. England, France & Benelux declares war on Germany for some reason. All but England falls rather fast. Then the US DOW's Germany and Italy DOW the Allies. Theres a little acion in Italian East Africa. Japan grabs a province in Guyana I think (it was from Netherlands or maybe Vichy France?). Argentina joins the axis. So does Hungary and Bulgaria. Italy DOW's Greece. Bulgaria (!) quickly grabs all of Greece's mainland.

1939 - Germany takes Checkoslovakia by diplomacy. Germany DOW's Poland and crushes them - Hungary gets some Polish Provinces (it got Slovakia before so its kinda big now). Then Germany DOW's Russia, so does Japan and the rest of the AXIS, (including Latvia(!)). Russia falls quickly even though Germany had virually NO forces at the Russian border at the time of the DOW. The "sorrowful peace" event happens after a while - Germany now controls all Russia on their side of the URALS. Hungary gets some.

After Russia is beaten back behind the URALS they strangely enough start the winter war against Finland... Russia cant get to Finland... Of course I join the war on Finlands side... Now my war entry is 100% and I see my chance... I DOW Norway and quickly annex them. Germany later DOW Denmark but doesnt attack them

The current situation late 1939: Nothing is really happening. Germany is BIG - from the atlantic to the urals. I control Scandinavia. I am the allies last hope but I am still neutral. I will probably try to make peace with the russians after a while and DOW Germany... after I have built up a tremendous defenceline along my baltic/north sea coast. I plan on attacking Germany in Murmansk and drive through down to Leningrad. If Finland joins the axis I can probably take them out fast. After I control Murmansk - Leningrad I will get Germany to fight in the heavy winter and encircle their forces. I will then pray to God Russia takes the opportunity to DOW Germany and move towards Moscow...

Will go and try this NOW Will tell u later if I managed to save the free world as a minor

Well, an after action report is a rundown of how you played your game and how it went. Some people make intricate, character driven naratives, others give the broad scope and focus on the actual game events.

I'm looking forward to hearing how these events go on.

Anyhow, if ya can beat the Germans (after they have destroyed the USSR) as Sweden, something is wrong with the game! Unless...you are using that 100% vicotry cheat...

Well I only invaded Norway after Germany beat up Russia. The Allies aint doing nothing anymore to stop Germany and my only chance is to get stronger - my security sources told me Quisling was on the move in Norway so I took pre-emptive actioin

I aint using no cheats and I play at hard/normal settings. I have fog of war off though during long peace-times - otherwise its just too boring

My plan is to attack Germany in the autumn of '41. I can move freely through Finland cause the winterwar wont end. I will take Leningrad and Murmansk and the rest of Kola and when the Germans couterattack in the winter I will encircle their troops and destroy them... hopefully.

Will be interesting to see if the AI can/will invade me in the south of Sweden though...

They have a lot of leaders who are "winter-specialists".

U should move this thread to the tech support forum as the way the AI behaves in your game is in urgent need of a fix. I cant stand how easy it is to take USSR out.

Didnt paradox notice just how large russia is? I mean after winning every battle it still took german panzers 6 months to even reach moscow. Is it because russian provinces are so large therefor less to take so actual distance isnt a factor?

Has anyone played a long war vs a single AI country?

I just feared for what I read:
Allies who declares war on Germany in 1937???
Japan who declares war on Netherlands and finally gain Guyana???
WWII won in 1939??

Just plain crazy, but fun though

I am playing 1.01

But I am getting a little disturbed... Its Jan '41 now and I plan to attack Germany in September. But...

What countries do:

Germany - Walks around with troops in Russia, there seems to be no plan behind the movements. They dont attack anyone anywhere although England and USA are their enemies. Why not do the Battle of Britain maybe? Or build some subs? France is defended by a few divs. A largre army has been standing close to the Spanish border for almost 2 years doing nothing.

USA - Does nothing. Has a few strategic bombers in England who fail everytime they do something. Its a fail-loop. They have a tremendous force in their homeland but they cant move them anywhere appearantly.

England - Is passive. Italy has grabbed all Egypt and East Africa. They strat-bomb as USA does though, with the same stupidity.

Russia - does nothing now. I guess they regret doing nothing when they were attacked by Germany also. Oh I forgot - they are at war with me and Finland as I said earlier. I just gotta mention that again. Russia declared war on Finland AFTER they made the "sorrowful peace". The only problem is that the sorrowful peace means Russia has no border against Finland. They have no navy either.

Japan - Has not done anything for 2 years. They dont finish of China for some reason (China only has about 10 provinces to the west left) but a large part of japans army is tied up in China. Japan doesnt finish off Netherlands East Indies either. IS THIS ALL A OUT OF SUPPLY QUESTION I WONDER??? I will start one savegame as Japan to check that out!

Italy - Italy is a blessing - at least they DO something. They are fighting in northern and eastern africa with great success. But their navy is passive cause Englands navy is not in the Med.

Ok I went in as USA and checked why they arent doing anything against Germany.

Situation: The only force USA has in Europe is 1 strategic bomber in England.

Here are some other examples of location of the bulk of the US army: Wake - 10 bombers nothing else; Houston - a couple of air squadrons and about 10 div of various land units; US east coast - A lot of inf and aircraft.

Why? The USA dont have ONE SINGLE TROOP-TRANSPORTSHIP!!! And they are not BUILDING ANY!!! They do have the tech to do so.

The US is at war against Manchuko (not Japan though) and I guess thats the reason for having 90% of your bomberfleet at Wake... OMG...

Concerning why Japan doesnt finish China and Netherlands East indies off: Dont know - all Japans superiour troops are in supply and have a nice organistaion value... WHY dont they attack???


Oh btw... England has no TP (troop transports) either.
The US has about 40 army divisions, Germany has 50, Italy has 60 (!)...

Germany only has 6 subs so it aint possible that they kill US TP's all the time anyway...

This is a little too fucked up


But I will continue! Guess i'll have to join the allies later and offer 20 TP's to the US as an expeditionary force

could the IA lack of action have anything to do with you palying with fog of war off, I mean it see everything just like you and are just waiting for somebody else to make the first move. Hmm just a far off guess.

Perhaps saving a save game would be a good idea, because my guess is - the moment somebody from Paradox will see this AAR they will want to see it. Or at least they should .

from my two games it seems very apparent that a situation like this may occur, but Russia managed to survive in my latest.

I see the problem just as he saw it, the AI can't handle transports after the ones they started with have been sanked... They don't build new nor repair the old so they end up doing nothing. the computer also is quite bad at using the planes it seems like it is just two behaviours USA/England bombing and some airsupport for land troops...

In defense of Paradox and the AI. I will only say "Remember England". Remember england of EU, how it got crushed by scotland and france every game. It was fixed. So I think paradox will fix it.

I played until jan '43.

Nothing happend.

Japan DOWed the US and England. The US thought massbombing empty Japanese islands was the key to victory.

England fought a little with Japan in Burma.

Nothing else happend. I thought about attacking Germany as I said but I waited for them to get some sort of distraction before I attacked. There wasnt any.

I guess Japan refuses to enter provinces that has below 34 in infrastructure

I'm sorry to say but this was one of my most depressing moments in my gaming history... the lack of action. Not for my own sake - I played Sweden to be able to WATCH World War 2 take place all around me. What I got was a quick confusing blitz and nothing else. I loved watching Japan go after China but they stopped halfways without any reason (other than infra).

I will now go and read some other AAR made by beta's and see if they had the same experience as I of the AI.

Hopefully future patches will make the game more enjoyable!

I'm thinking of setting up a MP game but I guess you have to be at least 5 humans - USA, Germany, UK, Russia and Japan. Then you will let the AI "simulate" the Italian and French stupidity in the war I guess

Hmm wierd. I am playing Brazil and its now 1941. Germany took over all of England but their advance ends on the Scottish border. Japan took over Hawaii but halted on Western China(who needs W. China anyways and dont forget how deadly the Himilayas are(my forces almost died due to lack of supplies when crossing those mountains!!)?). Seems to me the Axis are doing a good job. And the US seems to be scared of me invading them from Mexico(I took over Central and South America earlier) so they put a substantial amount of their forces on the Mexican border(if only the US did that in real life...). Oh and the Vichy French tried to retake my Indochina. Hehe... I encircled them and punished them with extreme prejudice.

Whats your difficulty?
