Description
Colonist take a walk of death

What is your game version?
227,923

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
so i have a bunch domes but one seems to have an issue when i specailze it to do something. my colonist seem to like to walk acorss the map dieing half way to the dome when all my shuttle hubs are basicly 90% idle. i walk way for a few mins and come back and find 20 have died to suffocating in the middle of nowhere. and its still going. the dome they are going to is specializes to prefer non spec colonist and children. and when the shuttles do work the drop off randoms that run the opposite way to another dome instead of calling another shuttle or something. its very very very irritating that my colonist are dying for no reason other them walking across a massive area instead of taking a shuttle.

Can you replicate the issue?
yes it just happens when you spec a dome to some level

I have the same issue (I think). I haven't investigated thoroughly, but my domes are specialized and I've recently had a couple of colonists trying to cross the entire map between my two dome clusters. Shuttles are available, although they might have been occupied. In any case, there should be a limit to how far colonists are prepared to run, to prevent this from happening. In one case, I even found one colonist running through the desert, as I was investigating the death of his colleague. Since he was in the middle of nowhere, I could just hopelessly watch as he died.

I just filed a bug report for another issue with an attached savegame, and when you load it up, the first thing you hear is a voice message that one of my colonists have died, from running across the open desert. :)

I'm having the same problem. In my case, I have a nursery/school dome set to prefer children and youth, and rather than take the shuttles the youth are walking to the dome and dying. Here's a save game with one youth on his suicide walk.

edit: where are the save games stored? I'll attach it once I find it...

Edit: Provided wrong version at initial post.

I noticed this happen twice in my current game.
It looked like colonists were attempting to get to a dome I had just activated quarantine on.
(Residences were already built, but I didn't want colonists to move in before services were up and running.)

Probably unimportant rambling here...
My best guess on what happened in these cases:
The colonist was tagged as assigned to the new dome, and a shuttle began to pick up the colonist.
Something changed, (like quarantine being activated,) and the shuttle correctly noticed it could not deliver the colonist to the dome.
The shuttle aborted the pickup, and returned to the hub.
The colonist hadn't recalculated their assigned dome, and attempted to walk into their new dome, the AI "thinking" that they had been "dropped off" by a shuttle. (In reality they were left behind; not dropped off.)
This, unfortunately, led to the colonist dying on the long walk to the new dome.

Edit: Addendum
Just made it to Sol 300+ in that same game.
I had several domes built in the Northern half of the buildable area.
I built another dome in the South-West, set it to quarantine before building any residences within it.
Upon finishing the construction of all in-dome buildings, I turned off quarantine.
Colonists began flocking to the newly opened dome from the existing (heavily overpopulated) domes.
(Literally in droves. Within maybe 15 seconds, almost 200 residence slots had been reserved.)
For around 1/4 of a Sol, the colonists waited for available shuttles.
After that, many began attempting to trek across the map to the new dome.
No active quarantine, nothing disallowed.
One dome in the North had several flaws prioritized, but nothing else.

My son is having the exact same problem in one of his games. So far he has had to issue over 100 Darwin Awards to colonists who have improved the gene pool by leaving it (and littering the regolith with their dessicated corpses).

Even though he has plenty of shuttle availability, if N colonists decide to migrate, 1 will take the shuttle and N-1 will take the scenic (and lethal) route. Then the game will decide that it need N-1 people to migrate, and the cycle will repeat!

He was not using the quarantine feature.

I am having the same issue. In my case the domes are separated by a giant ridge which is impassible (there are tunnels, however) and so they often wander off to some point along the ridge and then wander around until they suffocate. Seems to be plenty of shuttle capacity, and they frequently are taking shuttles, but maybe the ones that are wandering off are hitting it when all the shuttles are busy.

This may touch upon a related issue. If you send the Explorer vehicle to examine an anomaly that requires going through a tunnel, it will not pathfind correctly; instead it will take a circuitous path to get as close as it can to the destination without taking the tunnel, then stall.

In order to get the Explorer to the anomaly, you have to manually send it through the tunnel; once it is through, you can then target the anomaly. Note the difference: the Explorer pathfinds correctly when you target a location, but not when you target an object (the anomaly) as the destination.

Same thing is happening suddenly in my game. People are being transported to a new dome via shuttle, then immediately trying to walk back to their old dome. I just had 5 colonists die this way. I have had people decide to try to walk up a cliff face before and die, but never get a shuttle and then have cold feet on their move.

Colonist AI needs to be looked at very quickly, because I can't get it to stop.

I had the same thing happen a short while ago. I landed a rocket near a new dome, and only 6 of the 22 new arrivals actually took up residence in the closest dome, with the rest all going on a death march across the map to other domes, though a couple chose a distant dome they could reach before dying, but many did choose a dome they could never reach. The new dome had both an empty archaeology and 2 empty apartments, all active, so no reason for them to just randomly go straight from the rocket to some suicide death march to the other end of the map.

IMO this is a bug in the colonist's AI. Unless they're suffering from a suicidal mental break, they should not kill themselves on an impossible death march. I think there needs to be a waiting for ____ status so if a colonist needs to transfer to a dome too far away to walk to, they'll go into a waiting status until a shuttle is available to pick them up. If there are no shuttles, the game should just fail the move and report via the UI that the colonist can't move and why.

This happens to me a lot. I have specialised domes with different purposes, and suspect that colonists decide to walk to domes filtered to suit their traits. There seem to be plenty of idle shuttles available so I can't see any reason why they'd walk instead.

Same problem here - little different. Shuttles do not pick up any colonist from one dome. The colonists just ignore shuttles and tunnels and walk to death. I've found out the colonist dying in the desert are all "youth", "unemployed", "homeless" and have "no specialization" - Nothing of this is preferd by any of the other domes. Even when I assign them to a home and a job, after some time they prefer to die out in the desert again. I've lost already 90% of my colonists of one dome due to this problem. I even made a dome just to save some of those suicidal travelers but they pass it, when I do not assign them. I really have no idea how to fix it...
