Playing an ironman Brandenburg, it's 1473, and I've got a few local vassals, marriages, and allies. I'm up to my relationship limit of 4. I haven't expanded much; I've taken Mecklenburg and Neumark, and just annexed my vassal Pommerania. (I'm not emperor. Yet...)

Suddenly, a pop-up tells me I just entered a royal marriage with Auvergne, a vassal of France. Which was a total surprise to me, since I hadn't done anything diplomatically in that area. (It appears Auvergne has been a vassal of France this whole time, so it wasn't just released or anything.)

Can diplomatic events of other nations force the player into royal marriages? Has anyone else seen this? It's not that big a deal, really, I just don't need it all, and don't want to take the stability hit for cancelling it.

Thanks for any insight!

Yes, which is a major oversight on Paradox's part given how the mechanics now work.

It's called "Springtime", can happen to a monarchy which does not have an heir, a queen, a regency, or is a junior union partner, and can either create a weak claim heir or a royal marriage with a same-religion monarchy

Great, thanks for the replies, it makes sense. Luckily I've been getting a few +stab events, so this isn't that big of a deal. Still, I can imagine some situations where this would throw me into a rage!

Edit: Also, interesting I got a marriage with a subject nation, which you can't do through diplomacy. Still annoying, though...

I entered an RM with the Incas, who I hadn't discovered yet, in my Aztecs game. When their king died, I got a PU with them, but I still didn't know where they were. It's pretty silly.

I thought when an AI offers a RM it doesnt take a "slot" for the player? Or am I rambling?
I'm pretty sure you're rambling. Notice how AI countries never offer you an RM when you have no slots free, unless you already have some other slot-consuming diplomatic arrangement with them.

Hm I shall have to take a good close look at my diplomacy screen then, when I started my first game I just accepted Royal Marriages all over the place, and made some myself with bigger nations and only ended up at 7/4 dip slots used.

But yeah maybe I'm not thinking straight I haven't had time to play in two weeks.

They should really make a different pool for RMs, vassals and alliances really. Having to cramp them to your 4-6 slots its really annoying and out of context.
