When declaring war against Saxony, they were only allied with France and Lithuania. No biggie, DOW'd anyways.

After a week or so, I notice Mother Russia (among others) have lined up against me. Uh-oh.

There were no coalitions against me, what the heck happened? Was Saxony able to make allies AND call them to arms after I DOW'd, or was this France and Lithuania's doing?

France or Lithuania was probably allied to Russia. And since you were the one declaring war Saxony's allies were able to call their allies into the war.

Here is what happened:

Saxony was allied with some bigger power, like France.

You declare War. France is way bigger than Saxony and thus assumes control of the war. Now the war is handled as if you attacked France. Thus France gets to call it's allies.

That is a nasty effect, but sadly it is just the result of the usual game mechanics.

My biggest issue is that there is no popup, and no alert that you can set as a popup, when allies join in a war after the initial DOW.

As in, I'll declare a war, check the war screen in a couple days and go "haha, so-and-so didn't join in" then 2 months later so-and-so's armies come along and wreck me. I look and see that they are now in the war with no popup, not even a log entry exists to tell me that they joined in.

My issue isn't that people joined, hell let the whole world join in, I don't mind cascading alliances, but for the love of get give me some indication when someone joins the war!

This sounds right. France was the War Leader, had no idea they could call their allies.

So instead of creating Germany, I lost 3-4 provinces. f.

Aha, is there a way to relinquish control of war to a bigger country for player?

Say you're Granada or Algerie and Spain attacks. Can you make your ally Ottomans war leader, like France in OPs example for same effect?
