I was thinking about ogame and stellaris for a while when i came up with the idea of have defensive buildings palced in tiles of the planet, like the shield generator it would need to be operated to work and it wouls deal periodically damage to a orbiting enemy fleet. In this moment planets are pretty unprotected when they lose their space station (that happens very often) and only another fleet can defend them from the siege. It can be a resercheable technology and behave like the ship weapons: ground flack artillery, missile launchers, Gauss Cannons, Plasma Cannons, Laser turrets, Ion cannons and stuff like that; so the repeteable tech could be applied to the planetary defenses. You could make bastions and protect border planets from the first strikes of a war or make Synergy with the resilent trait.

Planetary defences that can cause some degree of attrition of invading fleets would be amazing and I've been supporting them for as long as I've been here.

The argument that they're "unrealistic" will always fall flat because planetary defence installations are a staple of science fiction and Stellaris has firmly established itself as space opera- the concerns of "a fleet in orbit will have a huge potential energy advantage and doesn't have to fight the gravity well" is meaningless in the context of this setting.

You dont need to fight the gravity well when you have a Tachyon lance turret :D (and yep, atrittion mechanic is what i want to see in stellaris)

I'm sure this will become a thing when they make a whole "warfare"-update in the future. It always seemed weird to me, that planets can't defend themselves once the space-station is gone, making them quite easy to conquer.
I mean if aliens wanted to conquer us right now, we sure would try to nuke them with surface-to-air missiles.

Right now it all comes down to one big battle doomstack vs. doomstack - after that, the war is more or less won, as the weak spacestation is the only remaining defense there is. This would be a whole different thing if you loose like 20% of you fleet each time you bombard a planet as it is attacking you from the surface.

But I hope they don't do the defense on planetary tiles as you have to waste a lot of space for defense, which becomes a problem on small planets (i mean - who builds a planetary shield?!). They should use a different window like the army- or the spacestation-tab.
