My question is:
How much influence does the supporting unit have on the battle? Would it be better to send an infantry division in with the attack, or just support?

It's a massive difference, and any division would do

Nope. Basically, it saves you from launching an attack and then having to cancel it to stop the movement.

So there is no difference to the damage done to the enemy units?
The only difference is that the support unit does not ultimately occupy the territory?

Another thing I am wondering... When the defender have units in neigbouring vertices, uhm... provinces and they have been set with the "reserve" function, will they automatically rush to defend a neigbour with a "movement attack" at the same time as the attacker does it, or will they have to walk into the battle province to increase the weight before joining the battle? And what about the support defence function?

Support defence is only for a specific province and the unit has to move in the province to help in combat, but it does it with 3x speed.

I'm not sure about "reserve", but i believe it doesn't provide a speedboni, but it works for any adjacent province not only for a single one, beside that it is the same as support defence.

My understanding was that a unit with support defence orders has to move into the province before joining the battle but does so at triple speed and will remain in the province afterward.

For reserve units I believe they still have to move in to defend but do so at double speed. Once the battle is over they move back to their home province at double speed and wait to support another battle in any adjacent province. The movement for reserve units is all handled automatically by the AI.

Will the 'support defence' units have to be moved back manually to their province of origin then?

...and...

Should one simply put defending forces in 'reserve' duty if, for instance, playing France and trying to stop the German onslaught in the Maginot line provinces? In that case you can concentrate on more pressing parts of the front (as a German panzer-charge through the Ardennes...hmm..deja vu...could they really...;))

As far as I understand the things it should work, units on reserve do help the frontlines, then go back to the reserve-status when successfully, while units which were given the "support defence" do rush to the province, helps in the battle, and then stay there.

Btw, are you from Switzerland too? :)

Sounds like a really nice feature the 'reserve' ability, although I would have prefered the 'support defence' units to move back after successfully defending the neighbour province.

Only Swiss ancestry from far back in history I'm afraid, but the little Swiss part of me is very much 'around', mein General! :)
