Hope this helps:

1) Not much to be honest. Support our party would really only have an effect if the aforementioned party managed to get elected or launch a coup (the latter of which is nearly impossible). Even then, the nation is just as likely to go to war with you unless you are in a faction in which case they will begin to drift towards your corner.

2) Again, not very much. Unless you really want to have your party in power for whatever reason, this is just a waste of valuable spies.

3) Ah, this time Support Our Party can actually be helpful. While it will take an understandably long time for a minor political party to gain any amount of reasonable organization and popularity, having a similar ideology to the country you wish to ally with will help a fair deal (particularly if you are in a faction and are influencing them).

If you are playing as Germany, you will need to set your spies to support our party in Austria in order to trigger Anschluss...Other than that, I have never used support our party...

what you can get is one of two things.

I've done this as the USSR and it can be quite effective, but its not quick.

If you get the org of your party (in the other country) to over 70 (I think - prob is you can't see this, but usually a good clue is that they are single most popular), and they have dissent - you get a coup. So I managed to get Mexico into the Comintern via this trick.

The other advantage, if you target a democracy is you can win an election - that makes the country very easy to influence into your faction - I did this to Venezuala.

Problem is it takes a fair bit of effort - you've got to get your spies up to 10, and the coup is a bit random as it depends on internal dissent as well. The advantage is you can really get a foothold in some places that are otherwise hard to reach.

I never was able to get the 40% before the "political crisis in Austria." Even if you did you might shed a month off it, a hell of a waste of spies IMHO.

It is actually posible to have the German-American bund elected in 1940 if as Germany you starts to work on supporting your party right from 1936, and by influencing them too, you can have them in your faction in no time. If you want to for whatever reason...

It can be effective as a part of a grand strategy but the timescale of hoi3 is a bit too tight to allow major successes.

I did a couple times but wouldn't again, invading the US as Germany is the only real challenge in the game, since Barbarossa is a pushover

agree, its not something you can do halfheartedly, you need time and to dedicate quite a lot of leadership to it.

I'm tempted to test out a 1936GC strategy based essentially on this tactic, could be either totally disastrous or rather sucessful.

That was lucky. I have been influencing the USA since the '36 GC start, as well as supporting the German-American Bund. They didn't get elected in '40, but should in '44 - they are the most popular part in mid-'42. I might choose to invade the USA (in'45 or '46), but I would like to keep them neutral as long as possible.

I'd like to know how you successfully kep the US out of the Allies. Even with me spending precious leadership on Influencing them, and 200 relationship through trade they still "Align with Allies" and end up in them before the end of '38. After that, they aren't going to have any change of heart, whoever you elect, are they?

You left the 3rd leg of the strategy out...using spys to "Support our party", are you doing that as well? To successfully pull the US towards the center of the triangle and out of range of the Allies: Trade to +200 relations, Diplomatic influence, Spys allocated to US (3 Bars) assigned to "support our party".

If you are getting a alignment of the US, with the Allies, by '38, then something else must be going on....is Japan up to some trouble? Perhaps you insulted the US AI................

I usually wind up with Austria by the mid-summer/early fall 1937 period. Spys set on; "Support our party", 3 bars, from 1/1/36...I also build relations to about +60, through trade.

There does seem to be some randomness in the engine. South Africa is a part of the Axis in my current game - the Boers don't seem to like the British... (of course Italy & Nat. Spain spent a lot of influence points on them)

I have many (and I mean many) trade deals with the USA. They are currently drifting towards the Allies at a rate that is about 0.1 above the drift towards the Axis. However, their distance to the Allies is 150+, so not a major worry.

Make as many trade deals as you can with the USA. It seems the number of deals, and not the quantity/deal, affects relations. So instead of one trade deal buying 50 metal, 50 rare metals and 50 oil, make 15 deals buying 10 each.

Also, the USA canceled all my purchase deals once my threat level went up. However, the supply deals (where I sell & they purchase) are still in place.

You could also try to increase Britain's threat level with your spies from 1936 onwards. That could cause the USA drift away from the Allies.

If it goes to current form, it means that whenever Germany goes for France, it's facing American Expeditionary forces. Last time round, the Allies (as a whole) declared on the Axis (as a whole) before the sausage-eaters even invaded France (I'd guess the AI was waiting for extra forces to be built to replace the ones left to guard the Czech border. They'd puppetted Poland, and left Czechoslovakia alone, which caused some confusion when the Czechs joined the Alliance 2 weeks into the assault on Northern France...
