So in a recent Muscovy game, Lithuania got itself into a peasant war fairly early in the game. While I was occupied elsewhere to jump on them personally, I was only too happy to spend some of my extra income on supporting rebels in hopes of picking up some future allies/eventual vassals. Smolensk was first on the list (especially as I didn't want them trying to walk into my territory while I was fighting hordes in the east) and with Lithuania in rebel hell, it wasn't too hard for them to gain independence. Everything was peachy-keen at start - +200 relations from financial support and an alliance... except Smolensk took all of 5 milliseconds to break alliance and rival me. This despite being something like ten times larger than 3-province Smolensk. And I was pretty much helpless to watch as Crimea happily took the opportunity to eat Smolensk because I still had a truce with them.
I just think that small nations with cultural ties to significantly more powerful nations should be in less of a hurry to paint themselves as targets just because they have borders, especially if said more powerful nation just spent a chunk of change to support their existence in the first place.
