If a neighbouring province is attacked, the support unit moves there to help defend, so you have an automated mobile reserve. It worked this way before, but due to the short battle time it only arrived to fight the attackers alone. Now it can reach the province in time to reinforce the defenders.

Jut read about it in the manual where it is a bit further explained. I'm looking forward to trying a more in-depth defense in AoD. I like that it becomes more difficult for an attacker to see where the defending troops are deployed when you don't have all of them deployed right on the border.

This is really a brand new game with the Support Ground Defense. What was often an easy invasion of England in H0I2DD is now a real slugging match in A0D when defending units start showing up seemingly out of nowhere!

When I started playing I thought support defense was like, "province x1 is attacked from province y. So neighboring province x2 attacks province y". Something like auto-flank. But as you say, now the units will arrive in time for a meaningful battle. I hope so...

Ok thanks for explaining. So it just means that the units will automaticly move there. Then I'm not going to use is because am always very aware how's attacking and how's being attacked and so one.

But it is nice that it could still work.

I think the manual said a unit in support defense moves into the attacked province faster than it would do otherwise, I guess it will simply be deployed closer to the target province prepared to move. If you move it manually it would have no preparation time and the movement will take longer so it does make sense.

Well, they will respond to any neighbouring province, now, so it already covers a fair-sized area. Fixing it to a map-defined area would be poor when you only hold one province of that area, for example.

Let say that the area borders are defined by the letters as below and that the mobile reserve (§) is in the centre of this area 2/3 provinces away from each letter.

Code:
  A B C D E
F H
 G § I L
M N

I would expect, keeping the feature you just mentioned, that a mobile reserve at regional (area) level would intervene in case of attack.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly; are you talking about this "area" being the "areas" defined on the map and used for air missions, etc.? If so, my issue with that (as it is for air missions, in fact) is that the order then means different things, depending on how the front lies with respect to the areas. This makes little sense. A variant order with a range of 2 provinces I could see - but then that could cover a huge area (and might be better handled through player orders, anyway).

If that's not what you mean, please explain further.
