I would like to come off HOI 1.5b now and go onto 1.6 i just have been reading very bad things about supply -30 bug thing. I'm not sure what that means but does it happen all the time? Is there worse bugs?.

If not can you tell me the *main* things you need to do when changing from 1.5b to 1.6?.

I recommend making a fresh installation of the game. That way, you have the old version to return to if you experience problems with the new. Install the game to a new folder from the CD. Then apply the 1.06c patch. Then apply the CORE 0.84 patch if you use that popular mod.

The big plusses are the tooltips showing combat modifiers so you can actually see what you are doing and the new logisticspenalties to prevent unrealistic invasions. Urban combat is also a great addition as are the Spheres of Influence (no more unrestricted DOWing).
The biggest changes are in arial combat where groups over 4 fighters receive a penalty for every extra fighterunit. 1.06b had the same penalty for humans and the AI, while in 1.06c it's for humans only which makes it very hard to achieve airsuperiority. It is not my favourite part of the game but if you avoid making large stacks you can live with it.
In 1.06 you receive damage in exchange for sunken shipping in unescorted convoys so you have to take real good care of your navy, but the plusside is that in 1.06c convoys, even with escorts can be attacked, which may make convoyhunting a viable strategy again against the British.
The -20 supplybug may affect troops in overseas territories, but there is a way around this problem(see this thread Out of supply combat problem for more information).
Other problems are one with the correct saving of the values for terrainmodifiers, but that is being worked on.
Some people say that it introduces more problems than it solves but all in all I'ld say it's a very good addition that introduces many of the constraints that commanders back then would have had to live with as well.

I have seen the -20 supply bug effect Soviet attackers and defenders, even when they have a connection to Moskow, etc. Mostly, it seems random.

Maybe they could just eliminate the -20 supply effect for AI countries, similiar to the recent change in A2A combat? It can really screw up the AI, and the AI needs all the help it can get. In fact, they shoulld eliminate the logistics penalty for the AI also, since it doesn't know how to annex, etc?

I wonder if the out-of-supply penalty has been introduced (as a bug) in one of the new patches or if we didn't know about it because we didn't have the tool-tips to see it.

Its definately not random - I have not had it happen for no cause with any other nation other that Japan. The main issues are (as I wrote in the thread refered to by Robert Koop) :

I think a lot of people forget that:

1) The more troops you have the more supplies/convoys you need to send.
2) If you reinforce you may use up your supplies so that you have 0 by 23:00 which causes the error to appear.
3) If you run out of supplies in the depot the whole area will be out of supply.

I may also add that the AI is a little crap at making sure this does not happen - like it usues all of its supply pool as russia to resupply the units thus causing the -20% to appear. Thats the only reason why they have -20 while defending/attacking.

If it does happen in any other situation pm me so I can look into the save if you have one.

I've been playing a 1.06c 39 MP scenario as Japan. We've been playing a game year; Japan has annexed both Nationalist and Communist China and is now about to annex the Philippines. I've yet to see the -20% out of supply penalty once in these campaigns. Maybe that's because I take good care of my supply stockpile and convoys. Maybe because it's a MP game and I'm not the host. Or maybe there's something different about the 39 scenario - the depot province in China is different from 36. Anyway, the problem is greatly exaggerated and is not a good reason to avoid 1.06c.

well the tests i did are with the 39 and 41 scenarios - and the bug is there in both cases - I would go for the fact that its an mp game. The pure fact that canceling all convoys to china still gives you the ability to resupply means that there is a bug somewhere.

True i think the problem can be managed and its not a good reason to avoid 1.06c and at this point since there is a "fix" I dont even think that they need to bother with it.

I had -20 supply for the entire campaign against China and I had more than enough supplies, I tried everything to correct it. When I deleted the supply convoys and set up new ones it dissappeared. Its definitely a bug with Japan but any other instances I think are working correctly.

I'm playing USA 36 and I got the -20 penalty after I landed on the Jap mainland. It came up after I tried to attack a neighbouring province. It's very frustrating when added to the logistics penalty. I had no problem in my other games.

could you send me the save to mkijewski at foster.net.pl ? I understand its 1.06c? Where u sending enough supplies. I just did more tests and I cant get the -20% to appear if I am sending supplies...
