The calm after the storm

After a lengthy period of wars and a sizable land gain - it is wise to consolidate your holdings for a number of reasons.

a) The Nationalism/ war exhaustion revolt risk needs to be monitored.

b) the 'badboy' reputation needs to be reduced to decrease trade income loss

c) Finances need to be diverted elsewhere - for example an early building opportunity of the stabilizing temples. This often overlooked building allows greater flexibility when declaring war giving ones nation less time in between recovering stability.

temples.jpg

d) Other nations usually get stuck in the rebel spiral - this is an oppurtunity to watch whilst you recover, they (the AI nations you have just been warring with) suffer.

So we watched and waited building a temple or so a year until much of realm was covered. In the meantime much was happening on our borders - we managed to seize a few more assets from the Golden Horde interrupting a bloody Hungary - Turk conflict.

hungary-Ottomanwar.jpg

It was looking dire for the Hungarians, we bided our time and entered at the opportune moment. Making quick easy gains in the crimea.

motherrussia.jpg

Forming a buffer state of Zaporozia and pushing toward the Black sea, whilst our 'allies' Hungary would suffer severe revolts.

The crucial other aim was to continue to attempt to reform towards the important westernisation event

mission-westernize.jpg

Still 3 slider moves away as of 1467, this would be a huge frontier that would see Novgorad starting to rival other nations in the west.

Readers,

Sorry for the time taken to update a holiday and return to work means the updates will be done once weekly from now on. The latest update is a bit short, though not a great deal newsworthy happened in that time.

Coinnaich: Great to have you on board - I will try and keep updating every week. As I say the horde war was close really - there were a few decisive battles that went my way.

Prawnstar:
That would certainly be the conventional Russian approach, I am wondering if I can get a bit more involved in disrupting the western powers however?
The Great Duck: Yeah I seem to get mixed up some times with some of the old states. Timurad for example :) will try to remember for the future.

Yeah Novgorods CoT certainly does help as does the Hansuetic league bonus.

Von Rundstedt
: Don't forget you are my ally there, oh well there is an update to appease you:)

Continued extension

After a period of peaceful waiting, the Russian people had been calmed and the merchants profits had been reestablished. I pondered what my next move should be.

finances1467.jpg

I could see the horde still held a significant threat and decided to expand the Novgorod realm further into the Urals and Crimea. Besides I had several cores in the region and so would not waste any stability on the attack.

military1467.jpg

Militarily speaking I could also do with continuing to go on the offensive against them.

So war was declared, their armies split into their disparate realm would be no match for my well organized and trained troops. Indeed all their neighbours also took the opportune time to attack them - something that we had cleverly warned them against.

Goldenhorderaid1468.jpg

After a good peace deal for us gaining three provinces - we turned our attention in to making good on our warnings and viciously declared war and took control of a couple of provinces in the Crimea....

Crimeanraid1469.jpg

... and the Urals

Nogairaid1470.jpg

In the meantime our warning against expansion regime had also paid dividends in the west as we installed puppet leaders in Riga, Lithuania and Polansk to control various small non profitable low manpower provinces.

vassels.jpg

Mother Russia

motherrussia-1.jpg

Finally in 1472, we would form Russia a nation to unite the people of the Rus. No longer would their be a distinction between Novgorods and Moscovites (let alone YugoSlavls and Pskovites). This brought more cores and much stability to the empire.

Continued temples were build in preparation for the stability reducing but vital mission.

westernisation.jpg

One of the effects of westernisation is to drop stability by 5 - it also requires a innovative government effectively stopping any missionary work. With a Russian patriach event to work towards I decided to take Divine supremacy as my next NI to attempt to try and keep some missionaries coming in.

Russia are lucky that along with teh westernisation event there is a perfect partner....

StPetersburg.jpg

StPetersburgscript.jpg

By making St.Petersburg my capital I had moved my stab back up changing Neva to a half decent province in the process.

As I headed into the late 15th century things looked rosy...

magnificent tactics ! ! if i understand correctly, that warning gives you a CB against the recipients, which in turn gives you no drop in stability when you DoW. correct ? ?

The Black sea - the next step toward entering the Western world

The Russian Tzar is linked with the Roman Caeser - as such early Tzar's saw themselves linked somewhat towards the old roman empire. An early lofty goal of Russian leaders (which indeed carried on into the 19th century with the outbreak of the Crimean War) was the eventual return of Orthodox rule into Continantinople.

Indeed in this campaign the Ottoman Empire (along with Hungary) were of some concern on our Southern borders. This would prove a goal for the next couple of years for Russia to reduce the threat of the Ottoman turks and start to take territory around the Black sea - to hopefully one day send a Russian fleet out into the Mediterranean.

At this stage there was a lot of gaurenteeing going on with the Islamic world in particular attempting to halt Russian progression by large scale gaurentees. However they only get so many diplomats and so loopholes were found as Russia attacked recently released nation Kazan to gain a nearly full foothold on the Urals...

RussiastretchesfullyovertheUralscon.jpg

and also extension out in to the east as far as had been previously mapped.

bordersstretchedtoedgeofknownwor-1.jpg

With large scale gaining of former muslim territory - missionaries were beginning to be employed as policies began to become more narrowminded once more. A couple of religious reforms also pushed converting to the Orthodox way one of the Russians priorities.

religiousact2.jpg

religiousact1.jpg

Meanwhile in the west, Scandinavia in particular was beginning to explode as Denmarks control of the Kalmer Union began to crumble. Finnish nationalist form a new nation...

Finland.jpg
.

So back to the Ottomans they were continue to cause problems for fellow christians...

theOttomanscontinuetostrikeatchrist.jpg

and so the now powerful Russian would enforce their will on the area and take some bordering territory in Bulgaria...

MovingintoBulgariawhilstHungarycrum.jpg

After peace was signed - a peasents war would ensue in Hungary - whilst the wiping out of Ottoman forces led to them being powerless to stop a byzantine revolt.

thentheOttomanempire.jpg

Hungary's power would also wane in the Balkans with nations like Bosnia and Croatia breaking free.

firsthungarycollapses.jpg

In the meantime Russia would work towards greater profit - it had noticed the western nations had increased their industrial capacity significantly and put its resources towards unlocking these secrets.

thefinancialscreen-resourcesdiverte.jpg

In the meantime - there were plenty of border skirmishes to keep the Russian military busy - In particular on the eastern shores of the Black sea.

The Russian realm began to spread to rather large levels.

thesmotheringrussianrealm.jpg

The financial situation looks rosy and with the recent discovery workshops is likely to improve greatly in the near future.

monthlyincomechart1499.jpg

Here it is noted that the western nations like France, England, Castille, Portugal and the upcoming Dutch are earning a fair bit of income and could do with some competition in the future. Of course some in game knowledge of the upcoming Protestant revolts may disrupt them.

militarychart1499.jpg

The military situation shows France to be a clear rival if we ever get into conflict.

An excellent AAR; I love the analytical style.

It looks as if Russia has little in the way of rivals now, although I expect religious rebels are going to be a problem.

Looking forward to the next update. :)

The quest to push south toward Thrace continued, however the Russian mega-realm was beginning to experience huge revolts and internal steps needed to be taken.

First, the Russian religious reforms would aid the missionary work going on throughout the recently claimed Islamic land. Thousands of conversions would take place.

Uniformreligiondesired.jpg

morereligiousnarrowmindedness.jpg

morereligiousacts.jpg

These various reforms would increase stability cost, however they would also increase the missonary work and drastically reduce the cost.

Indeed the zealousness of the command structure was shown in its National ideas.

astrangesetofNIs.jpg

The goal of Constantinople and control over the entry into Asia however would remain the number one goal and land was taken and the game plan was set to viciously dismantle the Ottoman regime.

pincherOttoman1.jpg

pincherOttoman2.jpg

Handily the recent Ottoman inversion into Hungarian territory allowed Russia to assimilate large areas of stragically placed Transylvanian provinces in a one sided and swift war.

Russiaswoopsin.jpg

Eventually after successive successful campaigns Russia would triumph against an utterly outnumbered and outclassed opponent.

theblackseaismine.jpg

and soon even better, Russia would be acknowledged as the supreme head of the Orthodox church. Not that it need this it controlled every single Orthodox province anyway.

russianpatriach.jpg

Russia would not stop there indeed after sorting out issues of Austrian expansion into the Balkans by forcefully getting them to release Bosnia - Russia would turn their attention to Scandenavia and the rising Swedish power.

unacceptableswedishexpansion.jpg

It may be predictable by now, but this unacceptable expansion was soon curbed as Russia would control the region with Finnish vassels

thefinnishvasselsgrow.jpg

Russia had not turned a blind eye to the east....

thecolonisationcontinues.jpg

and an oppurtunity presented itself for a huge slice of Christian holy lands itself. Indeed after centuries of attempts centralised from Rome the new Russian Patriach succeeded in creating a Kingdom of heaven of its own in a short time.

Theholylandnowrussian.jpg

The Roman Catholic faith was suffering protesting reformers in the meantime which was weakening western Europe.

protesters.jpg

and by 1550 as Russia continued to convert and solidify its grip on conquered lands its income lead over the known world was indeed mighty

russianincome1550.jpg

Russia now remained peerless - it observed the world with a morbid curiousity - it wondered now where to place its gaze. Would it head south to continue to eradicate Islam - or would it pace itself west towards Rome itself?
