Look at that BIG WHITE BLOB! This is with plain 1.07b (latest beta) GC, me playing Byzantium. I'd say that is probably the biggest and most "compact" Austria I've seen so far

I was doing quite well with Byzantium, but in the end I lost the game to Austria. :eek:o
Whenever I annexed a little balkan minor, Austria annexed a german minor. Whenever I expanded into anatolia, they took some italien states. When I wanted to make the black sea a byzantine lake, they attacked Genoa and took the whole of Krimea/Georgia from them. And when I finally attacked Egypt, they swallowed the better Part of France and inherited Hungary.

But that's not all. Due to the united nature of austrian lands and the big size, they are now the unbeatable techleaders of the WHOLE world. I'm at LandLevel 21, the next best nation after Austria (Netherlands) have LandLevel 31, and Austria has a whooping LandLevel of 43  !!!

They are now allied to Poland, Sweden and the Papal states, and scare the shit out of me and my poor Ally Russia.

Anyone can top this (AI controlled) Super-Austria?

I've seen big Austrias, but I've never see the blob just kill France the way this one has

I'd have thought pressure from Byzantium would have weakened them! What went wrong?

You're Orthodox techgroup, so you don't get any neighbor bonus. If you only invest in Trade and Infra, have stability problems and moderate inflation, that's not that unlikely to be at Land 12 in 1719.

I checked my recent Lithuania game and I reached Land 13 in 1659 - without ever investing a dime in Land. If you have worse monarchs or inflation, it might just as well take 50 years more.

perhaps it depends on styles
Perhaps. In SP, I never really bother to invest much in land (unless I'm going for an earlyconqest game). One or even two CRT below AI is still good enough to outsmart your opponent and you can always ally with the more dangerous of your neighbors. Once you max out Trade and Infra, you can start investing in Land and get it high really fast.

I'd be scared  if I was at 12 land and that monster Austria was nearby.

Byzantium tends toward a bit of inflation. Bankruptcies in the early wars against OE ensure it, at least it did when I tried them out. I hate inflation but if it's a choice between that and death, I choose inflation every time. ;)

This is just what happened to me as Byzantium in the game I wrote up for an AAR. They weren't quite that big, because there was a strong Prussia, but they were totally unassailable by 1755 and I just gave up. Even allying with France to attack them I never stood a chance.

I'd think the very low tech is down to the fact that this Byzantine Empire is mostly made up of Turks and Arabs many of whom will be wrong religion as well since they're hard to convert. I played as Byzantium and pretty much left the Turkish minors alone and then after crushing the Mamelukes had Egypt and Jerusalem as vassals. The White Blob was still always at least one CRT ahead of me, though :(
