I just bought the game. I started a game as the Ottomans. Not a bad nation to start with. They have plenty of cores to recover. I have finished recovering my cores and I am looking to expand further.

The Mumluks are allied with the Timurids, Golden Horde, and Crimea. I am also alied with Crimea, but they will join the others if I declare war first. The Timurids and Golden Horde have similar alliances. I am in the first Cold War. Nobody dare attack each other because the rest will jump on them. I also border Hungary on the Western front. They are allied with Austria, France, and someone else.

Is there a good way to break up a super alliance?

Can you post a map?

Timurids might be irrelevant if Qara Qoyunlu set them as a rival: they will not be able to get to you.

Also, who are Golden Horde's allies?

I am at work and can't post a map yet. I also don't remember who Golden Horde is allied with. I am pretty sure one of the allies was Timurids.

I have a quick related question. I was reading an AAR about Naples. The writer joined a war on the side of Poland. Austria was also in the war on Poland's side. The writer was then able to start a war with Genoa and Austria couldn't join against Naples. If I started a war with Qara Qoyunlu and Crimea answered the call, could I then declare a war with Mamluks and Crimea would not be allowed to join? That may still put me in over my head but it might be something I could use in the future.

Try to ally with some minor powers bordering one of both alliances. Even if your allies don't have any chance you can use the time while your enemies are dealing with them very effectively.

Not to forget that all the minor muslim states usually are very happy to get peacefully assimiliated into the happy ottoman family anyway :)
I think besides the Mamluks I pretty much diplo-annexed everything outside of India by now...

Once you got a couple of military tech ups you'll brutally murder hordes anyway, so don't mind them once you're like 3 techs higher than they are.

Europe however is a bit harder. Be opportunistic and declare war when one of the super alliances is at war with another super alliance, it WILL happen sooner or later :)
I had the same problem with Poland+Lithuania+Austria and Hungary+France+Sweden...until they went to war and I hopped onto a P+L+A which only had like 20k troops left since they got annihilated :D
Now I got a 6-provinces Ukraine vassal :)

You could of course start building up a navy early on and try to cross over to Italia before Spain munches it up (which can easily happen because of Castille getting a personal union over Aragon which got one over Naples...) - you should be able to fabricate claims there once you get the coastline provinces from Venice and Bosnia/Serbia or whoever else is there.

In times of cold war, my strategy is to just let time pass, expand elsewhere, and just attack a few months after they get involed in another war (a few months, because then their troops are away in ennemy territory, and the few early clashes happened, ie it is best time to attack; if later, they will just peace out). Or simply wait for alliances to break up, or for you to be strong enough to beat all of them. Last possibility is to declare war on one of Mamluks ennemies, your allies will join (usually, Crimea doesn't likes Golden Horde for ex), and then, when Mamluke join in, they won't be able to call your allies that already joined in.
