I am playing a game as Byzantine Emperor (Old gods start). Currently have about 20K troups at my disposal (including retinues). The Sunni Caliph with his 10k troups has already declared two holy wars for Azerbadjan against me. On the other side of the map was a Shia uprising in Andalusia which succeeded. Now this Shia caliph (also around 10K troups) has declared a holy war against me (I conquered some lands in Mauretania).

Have they become suicidal with the latest patch?

I had that occur in one of my old Zoroastrian restoration campaigns back during 2.5. The Caliph had been reduced to 6k troops against my 20k, and every 30 years he would declare a jihad for Mesopotamia, Arabia, Syria, or Persia.

He's referring to Holy Wars though, not Jihads.

@Chunakun Yes I've noticed that as well, I started as Turkestan and conquered the whole Steppe region and Eastern Europe and every so often the Shia and Sunni Caliph would declare Holy Wars against me and I'd completely destroy them. To give them credit though, I had minor uprisings at the time but nothing that was going to be very advantageous for them.

I find that the caliphs are always over-aggressive. Last patch, they attacked me with my 60k troops.

They had 3k.

This has always been a problem with all religious heads, not only caliphs. They've always been way too agressive and too eager to declare crusades/jihads/GHWs against much stronger realms... even if that religious head is the last independent realm of his religion on the map.

I had the new Sunni caliph declare a jihad on me for Andalusia once. At the time I was Emperor of Alba and overlord of Germany, Norway, Spain, Brittany, and Lithuania. He was the Emir of Mecca, courtesy of the Hashemids recreating the caliphate after it got destroyed somehow (still not sure what happened there).

The real punchline is, there were plenty of Sunni realms who could have joined and maybe given me more trouble, but nobody did. I stackwiped him, sacked Mecca and captured half his family, then forced him to surrender after bankrupting him with ransom payments.
