I love elevated metro, for it's efficient as underground metro but much cheaper (well, perhaps not much but anyway cheaper). In Tokyo DLC we even have a more fascinating mode of transport---Monorail. The monorail replaces the trams but is better, at least in Tokyo: first it travels above ground so is free from traffic jams and will not block buses from pulling into stops. And, the capacity of monorail trains are slightly larger than that of most tramcars. In short, it's a magical Japanese mass transport mode...

Here I have some suggestions regarding elevated metro and monorail, some for either one and some for both...

1. Stations on slant streets
*Please correct me if I'm not using the word "slant" properly: here I mean streets that are not north-south or east-west, but an angle (45 degrees in the game) to these directions; in other words, streets heading NW, NE, SW or SE.

There are a lot of slant streets in Tokyo---we have some in other cities but not as many as in Tokyo---here entire neighbors are slant. While we can build bus stops and trams stops along slant streets, we can build neither elevated metro stations nor monorail stations. It's kind of unlucky because we do need lots of stations in those areas although their streets are slant. We can construct metro or monorail rails at a 45 degree angle so we should also be able to build stations on those slant rails.

2. Active altitude/height selection

We are able to select depth (another kind of altitude, negative...) when we build metro tunnels and stations. I think we should be able to select height when we build elevated metro and monorail, too, although there might be more than 3 altitudes. Actually there are different altitudes for elevated and mono, but we're not able to select---they're automatically determined.

However consider this case: the rail goes up (altitude rises) when it crosses over a highway. I want to build a station right beside the highway, but I can't. The reason is the rail is higher in altitude than when I build it on ground, but the altitude of the station remains unchanged. They can't connect, so I can't build this station. In another case for monorail, I want to build a passing line over a highway since doing this saves space for stations, but I can't, either. Because I can't choose the altitude of the passing line so there's sufficient clearance beneath it for the highway.

3. Y-switch

In different countries this thing has different names. But if you know anything about railway, you should know what I'm referring to. A Y-switch, or more accurately a symmetric Y-shape junction/equi-lateral switch, is a switch at which one set of rail divides into two, one to left-hand and the other to right-hand, AT THE SAME POINT.

However this kind of switch is not available in the game. We can't make a T-shape junction with rails, because the rail can only divide into a left-hand side-line and a straight line, and the straight line THEN turns right in the next grid. This is also a kind of Y-switch but NOT symmetric. Sometimes we do need symmetric Y-switches on metro or monorail when two or more lines join together.

What do you think?
Welcome to post your opinions.

1) Definitely. It would probably be easy to do that, just allow us to turn objects 45 degrees.
2) Might be a bit easier in *some* track configurations... but allow us to turn that off.
3) Useful.

1) this has been asked and discussed over and over again. 45o stations are not supported by the game code.
2) 2 levels at most, on the current size and height of german cities they would look ugly in my opinion.
3) no particular opinion on this one

Honestly I don't understand how's the core mechanism of the game working, but from my simplest understanding, since the game is fully 3D and we're able to continuously rotate view, and in addition the rails can be built in 45 degrees and trains can run on them... I think we should be able to build 45 degree stations... How to deal with the code is should be the developer's consideration : )

What I'm trying to say in No.2:

The monorail in the lower part of the picture can't get connected to the monorail in the upper part, in the path above the street on the righthand.

Elevation 1.jpg

Why?

Because when the monorail goes over a highway, its elevation rises, like this.

Elevation 2.jpg

However, when I try to let the monorail rise when building it, I fail. Because the station can be neither raised nor lowered. So there're no enough length for the rail to climb up over the highway again after pulling out from the station.

Elevation 4.jpg

If we can adjust the elevation of the station, I will build it at the same height as the rail that crosses the highway, so the monorail train doesn't need to climb up and down...

A lot of american metros use Y and X switches. They're great in tight spaces. You can't cross two rails over each other either, except with trams, all of this can be done xD

I agree all of these junctions should be available in the game. I also wish you could be metro and monorail stations down the median of the highways like in real life. Also one other thing I don't understand is why the monorail is single tracked except at stations and the double tracked crossing piece. Now there are some monorails in real life that are single tracked but the majority of monorails in real life, especially those used for high capacity public transport, are double tracked. Another thing is in real life monorail switches are actually parts of the monorail beam that move side to side to switch trains from one beam to the other.

It was probably done so that the monorail is different from elevated metro.
Not being able to build diagonal stations just sucks. It sucks with elevated metro and it sucks even more with the monorail, since it replaces trams you'd otherwise use. It seems the game engine is very limited in some aspects, like the number of "networks" (so you can't have trams and monorail at the same time). Well, perhaps this could be solved in Cities in Motion 2? :)

Stations in the middle of highways is a wonderful idea. Will they add BRT lines that have island platform in the middle of streets, too? Hmmm...
I do expect that monorail has double-track but... since traffic jams have nothing to do with monorail, I just tolerated its absence... sometimes as long as space permits I build those yielding sections (or whatever they are called) one after one, after one, after one......

I tend not to build elavated metro mainly due to the fact they they dont fit in most places.

It would also be nice to have the choice of both monorail or tram on tokyo map and all other maps as well.
