I second the Genoa recommendation. This tag if often overlooked as they have no achievement to their name, but they have a lot of flavour mission and events and unique starting position.
Just Burgundy I think. As one of the subjects it still fires but you're not caught in it.
Or just Culture-Shift as HungaryRagusa into Croatia. You have small neighbours to eat at the start, middling powers a little further away to eat at the middle, and a few great powers next door to eat at the end.
Plus an amusing achievement

I was planning on just (though unfortunately it never fired) that in a previous abandoned run since I figured there'd be no real limitations for it. Hell, if Milan got it in my latest attempt, there's no reason why Holland shouldn't be able to get it.Going even further, you can inherit Burgundy as one of their former subjects.
Yeah, both of those things made me abandon Florence pretty quickly despite their excellent ideas. There's nobody to eat quickly because the alliances are always strong enough to stop you in your tracks, and the Pope is indeed very likely to rival you. At least you start with a good ruler so you don't have to rush that much, but it's not exactly a mere matter of waiting when you have to deal with big alliance triangles (especially involving the Pope) or Aragon allying Lucca. Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone!
I did a quick test run as Florence last night. Seemed like everyone else was getting strong alliances much easier than I was able to, made expansion rather difficult. Is it basically a foregone conclusion that the Pope will rival you right off the bat? It's a pity, because that invalidates my + Papal Influence tradition.
Switch to Protestant in the reformation. Problem solved. You want the popes land anyway. Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone!
