Nah, don't really see the point in this.

The US is already enough of a pain in the ass to conquer as it is considering its geographic position. I don't see what warrants the US getting special mechanics for this beyond what other countries get. If you think it's because of the stereotype of the US as being gun crazed, that was actually much less true in the 1930's than it is today. Additionally a lot of other countries that have banned or heavily restricted firearms today had much less stringent laws and firearms were much more prolific. Norway comes to mind.. in fact, gun club members in Norway actually banded together and held off a German attack to give the King time to escape.

The idea for the Spirit (and the actual name of the spirit) comes from an apocryphal quote attributed to a Japanese admiral regarding the chances of a Japanese invasion of the mainland US. I think it might even still be one of the quotes used in the HoI IV loading screen. I know that the quote is bogus, and that the US wasn't necessarily more gun crazed than some of its contemporaries, but it does line up with how Americans at the time saw themselves. Gun culture was just beginning to hit its early stride in the US in this time period and since this is a "national spirit" we're talking about it wouldn't be strange to put it there in my opinion.

Also I feel like it would balance out early attempts to conquer the US, since doing so totally skews the balance of the game in the long run.

Gonna have to agree with the other guy on this one. A spirit like this would only serve to make the USA even more of a pain in the ass to conquer than it already is. What's more, you yourself admit that this is less to do with the reality of America and more to do with Americans self-perception. Simply put: there's no good justification for America being particularly resistant to occupation (especially when USSR and Yugoslavia have no such buffs)

And I would honestly argue that, given Americas history of being sheltered from invasion/genuine threat, they might even crumble easier if occupied. Since Americans have never historically been tested in this manner, while most other countries have a long history of such things. More over, there are large swathes of the population who were not too ideologically far-removed from the European Axis and I don't think a collaborationist movement would be hard to imagine (especially in the south or midwest where there were many German immigrants). Obviously this is all speculative but the point still stands: I see no reason whatsoever why the USA would have a buff against occupation.

Also I feel like it would balance out early attempts to conquer the US, since doing so totally skews the balance of the game in the long run.

Or we could just have the US actually defend itself from attack.

Or we could just not play weird meme games that involve attacking the US when it's weak and seizing it without barely firing a shot because the US can't seem to understand that Mexico or Canada are about to attack it.

Or we could just tell the USN to actually protect the coast of the United States.

I mean, we got lots of options that might be a bit closer to historical reality than "assume everyone in the US is an armed partisan." There were lots of reasons CONUS wasn't invaded during the war. (or even in the years preceding it)

It already gets a defensive spirit when core territories get occupied.

America gets 'Homeland Defense Emergency Act' when any core territory is occupied. Granting 20% attack and defense.

if a state is taken you can get 90% war support and remove Great Depression for 50pp

is that enough?

it also puts you in extensive recruitment and war economy too.

is that enough?
