An optional story/event late in the game could tie in Surviving Mars and Surviving the Aftermath.

All contact had been cut off between Earth and Mars since the disaster, and there is no longer a means to escape Earth.
As far as people on Mars know, Earth is an uninhabitable, desolate waste; so for many years, no attempts to return have been made.
If technology advances enough, could it be possible to restore communication with Mars?
If so, will they send help, or offer a way out? Would the changes in Earth's environment mean Martians will struggle to survive on Earth, since they haven't been there to adapt like the survivors have?

For Surviving Mars, perhaps a story set from their point of view;
learning of the oncoming destruction, trying to find a way to help, dealing with the apparent loss of Earth, and trying to accommodate as many evacuees as possible in a limited amount of time.

Something like a sattelite/booster stage comming down can usually be squezed in.

Of course, that could be troublesome for earthlings. They might fear that a "Martian Invasion" :D

The space junk catastrophe could be a good way to replenish science points and resources in the world map, and maybe include the odd Martian probe here and there. (They can't function properly due to the radioactive atmosphere, so they just crash) Perhaps they could contain messages from the Mars colonies and unlock new tech to build.

That chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one :cool::D
The chances for any specific person to survive and make it to your compound were about that bad too :D

Actually the lack of contact could be seen as a Fermi-Paradox situation: Since they have not yet contacted us, maybe they did not make it either?

Did you ever hear of the Kessler syndrome? Basically the idea is that all the stuff we already put into orbit, will cause a cascade were each piece of debris will just make new debris with existing debris and not yet debris (satelites), wich results in earth LEO becomming inaccesible for a few centuries. There is actually some decent data indicating that one might have already started/might only be avoided by carefull management of space.

As for radiation: Mars surface is so radioactive, any real life colony would need either massive amounts of shielding or be entirely underground. Between that and the limited solar input, it might actually be more feasible to put blimps into venus upper atmosphere then humans onto mars.
