Hello.

With the latest expansion, I've tried a few games of MegaCorp empires. It is a pretty interesting playstyle that really constrains how much of a sprawl you can have, but at the same time you are too dependant on neighbouring empires' ethos/civics to even use the features of your government (commerce agreements).

Surrounded by xenophobes? Tough luck, no branch offices for you. Other MegaCorps? Same thing. Fanatical purifiers, machine empires (any of them I guess), hive minds (any of them I guess), still you can't use your branch offices.

I literally quit my current game because despite doing relatively good, I could not get any commerce agreements going which means I am basically playing a regular empire but with worse civics. Since a mechanic was introduced that depends on AI government types, I suggest the following: create sliders for AI hive minds, MegaCorps, machine empires, and total war style empires (purifiers, devourers, annihilators) respectively. Toss in the checkbox for a random number of them, so you can have 1-3 AI megacorps in the galaxy, instead of like 5-6 in my half of the galaxy. Want a game of eternal war? Max up the slider for the purifiers.

I have the same problem. Playin as a criminal corporation. I have discovered 7 empires around me. 5 are corporations. I mean...seriously? It would be like if you are a determined exterminator and 2/3 of all other empires are determined exterminators too. How is the kind of empires the game generates calculated? Is there some kind of formula or something? Because playin as a megacorp and having 5 out of 7 other empires as megacorps too is not fun.

That's one of the reasons I started to create custom empires and only allow them to spawn. Did that already before megacorp because I hated how 2/3 of the galaxy usually end up being Federation builders and they all join the huge blob and then the galaxy is boring af because no one dares to challenge them anymore.

I agree. It's nice to play in a totally random galaxy, but it's also nice to determine the balance of empires, too. I find galaxies that are populated almost entirely by one ethics type to be less interesting to play, and I get them surprisingly often.

This is my biggest complaint with Megacorps so far. I have abandoned 12+ games within the first 100 or so years because of empire spawn. If they're not Gestalt or another Megacorp they're Hegemonic Imperialists or worse. :(

The only real success I've had is as a Criminal Syndicate on stellaris_test.

Yeah, its always been a slight nusancebut with megacorps whole gameplay shtic being so dependant on compatable empires theres a real need for this.
