I once played this game Project Earth, that was a space RTS. In its gameplay it was pretty standard space RTS, but it had quite a few missions where you didn't simply fight on 1 map. You had to fight on 2 or 3 maps at the same time in some missions. There was no way of transferring units between the maps. Each one of those "threads" was like its own match. One could switch between maps with F1, F2, F3, F4, F5 respectively. It did definately freshen up the normal gameplay for me.

Thoughts?

Well, it's not too different from what you describe with the difference being that you can ferry ships between "sectors". Each map is split into several regions and you will often be fighting battles separately in them. However, since you have one ship that leads the expedition as your "mobile base/command ship" it wouldn't make sense to have several closed-off battles. The story revolves more around exploration- it's not about interstellar conquest.

I didn't know that you had smth like that already, noice!

The game that I talked about, also was about exploration. The premise in prinsiple was similar, but it had like three "adventurer's parties". Some times during the campaign two of the parties got in trouble at the same time and then the 2 parallel matches began.
