Ok, so it feels like one of the unintended side effects of of the new non tile system is a lack of uniqueness to planets.
Sure, each planet is of a type and size, and some have unique features like, rare animals or odd factories, but nothing quite like the joy you felt when you noticed a planet of 80% habitablity that had 3 bellithium resource tiles for your big power plants. Or maybe it was just an unusually high number of +mineral slots, or those double resource slots that you could use if you put right building type, like a slave processing center.
The tiles bonuses had some value, and now that value is gone. But i think we could bring it back.
What if you added special districts to worlds? Like on the district display, you would notice like 1-3 districts of each type that had gold stars on them and if you clicked on them, they would say, "thermal energy source" or something and would give a +2 energy per worker bonus. Naturally, the game would automatically put built districts on top of the bonus tiles first, so if you have a world that has a few bonus districts, you first have to build those districts to use the advantage and then get workers on those districts. But it would make worlds feel more unique, if they had bonus again like the tiles used to.
You could even lock some really powerful bonus behind a tech, like those +10 power planets we used to have. Or maybe you could still build energy district on them, but the bonus star would be greyed out showing its not active. Maybe some district tiles could have dual bonus, and you have to chose how to use them, and placing a district of one type will take away a star from the other district type because it was dual resource, not 2 separate zones.
I just feel that the worlds feel blander now, just a number based on size and who many of how each district type max they could have, and what rare features they do have are usualy stuff like +1 max energy district, or other rather boring effects.
In the long term, on a fully inhabited world, it probably wouldnt change much, but it might just make for worlds interesting enough to risk your empire cohesion and spread out towards something if you find worlds with lots of special districts. It would make for more strategic reward for planing out which direction you want to expand towards, if you are aiming for a particular planet with good bonuses.
