"Hungarian" might've been an acceptable ethonym for this culture when CKII was first released. The problem is, we've dialed the clock back several centuries since then. In 867 and 769, "Hungarians" haven't even settled in the Carpathian Basin yet, and it's not unusual to see them elsewhere. It's hella weird to watch "Hungarian" culture spread across Russia or the Steppes.

Why not change the culture's name to "Magyar" instead? Not only is Magyar the autonym of Hungarians themselves, it's broader term that more eloquently and accurately encompasses both settled Magyars living in Hungary and the nomadic Magyars of the Steppe.

Furthermore, many existing cultures seem to be defined off ethno-linguistic groupings. The Hungarian language itself is often called Magyar.

If they make a change they should make a seperate culture for Magyar (tribal/nomadic Hungarians) and Hungarians (settled Hungarians). So the tribal Magyars wouldn't use some European names anymore.

While I agree that this would be ideal, I doubt that the devs are interested in adding an entire new culture this late in Holy Fury’s development cycle.

I was inspired to post this thread by the new Hungarian portraits we’ve been seeing on stream, which use Baltic faces and Cuman garb/hair for a distinctly Magyar look. Even if it’s only for the time being, a name change may be best compromise we’re gonna get. In other words... it’s better than nothing, don’t you think?

Although you are right concerning the likelyhood of a cultural split, the "Magyar-looking" clothes that you have seen are used as an Early Clothing set for the Hungarians: they switch out of them past the early start dates to represent the transition from nomadic to settled lifestyle on the portraits.

That's awesome to hear; I love changing garbs. I'd still argue in favor of the name change, though. "Magyar" denotes both the nomadic and settled cultures in question, whereas "Hungarian" is a term much more strongly associated with the settled culture (that is, the Kingdom of Hungary).

The word "Hungary" actually originates in a confusion on the part of the Germans.
Nomadic Hungarians were thought to be the Onogur-Bolghars (or Onogurs for short) because they looked very similar to them. So they started referring to the area they occupied as "Ungarn" (i.e. "Land of the Onogurs). Form then on it spread to France (Hongrie) and then to England (Hungary --> Hungarian).
Hungarians refer to themselves as Magyars because of the seven tribes "Megyer" was the one that eventually rose to dominate the rest of them in the 10th century.
But if you really want to make a distinction, Hungarian should be a melting pot culture of Avars/Slavs who live in the Carpathian Basin and the migrating Magyars (considering that modern day Hungarians have more in common with them genetically than the settling Magyars).

Barring the addition of a late melting pot, I'd settle for a more appropriate name + a change in garb to reflect the abandonment of nomadic lifestyle.

Like I said, it's only if you REAAAALLY want to make a distinction between the two names. I'm a Hungarian and I'm fine either way.
