I am certain that when we attack a Province and capture it, it will immediately switch to our color.

Well how about when one nation is attacking another province, could we a special effect that makes the color of the attacking nation slowly creep across that defending province?

To display who is winning the battle. If the province stays the defending nations color throughout an entire divisional battle, obviously the defenders easily and quickly repulsed their attack.

It would look so awesome to see the big red blobs of cut Soviet territories to be turning gray from the west and southern direction of the German advance as they capture province after province in this slow, creeping motion.

Why do you say that?

It sounds so reasonably easy to do and make the map more interactive and engaging there's nothing negative to be concerned with.

No puff of smoke, no magic, no nothing. Just the color of the advancing nation repainting the one they're going to win over or/and capture.

That'll be difficult to program for 10,000 provinces, and wouldn't really add much flavour IMO. Besides, with such small provs, the armies will take up most of the prov anyway, so you wouldn't be able to see it anyway.

I happen to disagree Wilco.

And unless you have any sort of education in game making, why do you just assume that because 10,000 is a high number, that it would be difficult to create a mechanic? I mean no disrespect, I don't either, but Paradox Entertainment has made 3,000 provinces in HoI2 and has done amazing things as so many other 3D games, I can't see why it should be any different here.

Well that's your opinion, I think it would take Hearts Of Iron 3 to the next level the company is taking it to in an 3D environment. I want to hear a Paradox developer comment and see if this is a good or bad idea.

Well actually if you look at the provinces in this Alpha version I take it, the divisional icons are very small and they do not engulf the province. Plus think about what you're saying. If you look at a screenshot someone posted of it in that thread with the trailer you'll see that it is very easy to see around the army icons to the German gray and French dark blue.

my problem with your suggestion is that it would add a strain to the PC that is not a very necessary inclusion. Think about it...in 1944 there could be as many as 1000 provinces being fought over simultaneously. In your proposed idea the processor would have to take into account all the battle mechanics to determine how much province color to change, and consistently do so for the entire length of each battle. No longer being in 2D, the rendering effect could be disastrous. (and I do have a degree in digital art)

I rather have weather effects & Terrain on one map.

I always hate to switch between those two, to find out if it´s raining, snowing or not, withOUT having to scroll over a province.

how about just some boxes to check what info you want to be displayed on your map.

someone would like to have terrain and weather displayed simultaneously.

Creeping colours might be a little much... What I would like to see would be some indication in the political map of who owns the province. Useful for peace planning.

IF air units are modelled as they are in HOI2 (I hope they will be abstracted somehow for lesser micromanagement hell) I hope that the maximum range of the air-corps you have selected becomes visible on the map (I.e. as you select the corps, the provinces which are within the range are highlighted somehow).

This would make using air units a bit faster.

To the Original Poster, that would be a great Idea!
You could see who is winning, without having to check the screen, which would help a lot in big invasions!
Great Idea!

Really good idea, had the same idea almost simultaneously when I heard HOI3 was coming. If you check the trailer closely something that looks like this seems to be implemented.

About 38 seconds into the video you can see an ingame shot. And what do we see on the right? German grey creeping into a French province. The black lines are apparently the province borders. The German grey is only partially between those lines. A German unit is in the area. This seems to indicate the gradual color change which this thread is about. Looks like they're doing this.

My guess is that almost everything you see is 3D except the HUD bars on the top of the screen. Provinces are rather simple polygon shapes which would make this effect a lot easier to make than with simple 2D. My guess is that procedural engineering is used. Unit models are more detailed 3D models.

Interestingly I notice less provinces in this shot of France, GB, Holland and Belgium then in HOI2. Where did they put the rest of the 10,000 provinces?

The black lines are REGION borders. The light grey lines are province borders.

I do not support this idea... simply because I feel that the CPU clock cycles could be put to far better use. "Eye-candy" is fine... but only AFTER all the desired functionality has been implimented, without lagging the game.

No, what you see is a region in which a province has been taken by Germany. You see, the thick, black borders are the region borders. The province borders are much, much fainter. Which also answers your question:
Interestingly I notice less provinces in this shot of France, GB, Holland and Belgium then in HOI2. Where did they put the rest of the 10,000 provinces?
there are actually more provinces on the map in that screenshot, you just don't see them.

EDIT: I've been emu'd, for the first time in my life!

My wish for the world map is to have a real 3D Globe, so when you zoom out you see the earth from space. What a wonderful feeling it would be to conquer the world then.... :D

I think this thead is heading for lock and key.

As for the origional topic, I conccur that is is a waste of resouces, and wouldn't add much flavour to the game.
