Hi. I have finished all the tutorials.

Is there a recommended "first game" for a newcomer?

Opinions vary greatly. Some people suggest the USA, which is nearly invincible, has no ressource problems and good tech teams; or the SU, which also is rich in natural ressources and industry. Both are fine for a beginner, but I'd suggest Germany '39.

Pro (for beginners): Immediate action. Land and air combat, hardly naval. No convois to colonies to take care of. No opportunity to screw your country before WW2 by investigating in the wrong builds or researches. WW2 is guaranteed.

Against (for beginners): No opportunity to shape your country to your liking before the war. Many divisions to handle at once. You do have to trade for ressources.

Prepare to royally screw up a couple of times: See it as an extended training game. When you find you don't enjoy it anymore, or you see the state of your nation as somewhat lacking, start again from '36 and shape Germany to your wishes.

It depends on how YOU learn best. I have put hundreds and hundreds of hours into this game, but if my first game had been with Germany I would have been overwhelmed and probably put the game away and not played it again.

My first game was with the USA. It can be very boring, with 4-5 years of peace to start the game but you get to learn how everything works at your own pace and nothing happens until you want it to.

The USSR is probably the easiest country to play. They have more manpower and resources than they could ever use, decent tech teams, and a very focused goal to start the campaign. With a decent sense of history and how to play the game it should be very hard to lose as the USSR on Normal difficulty, even your first game.

If you like to jump in with both feet and learn by swimming or sinking then Germany is a good choice. You will have to learn to deal with everything except Naval combat almost right off the bat. Germany is the most fun to play, IMO, and you you wouldn't get discouraged by failure is a great starting country.

My suggestion would be to start with the USA before moving on to Germany. It lets you make sure that you have a good grasp on the game mechanics and intricacies before you move on to high-action, fast-paced game you'll get as Germany. Moving on to Germany from the US will allow you a better grasp on the military and diplomacy.
