Would anyone else like to have the option to name the children born to their character or dynasty?..........I get some very random names sometimes so when a child is born it would be nice to have a few options to choose from!

I love the "Lambert" branch of my dynasty. Lambert, son of Lambert, son of Lambert, son of Lambert...unfortunately they then chose Poppo and immediately died out. Divine retribution, possibly. Completely AI done; I suspect there is a increased change for the AI to choose the same name as the father ...or was I just that "lucky"? ^^;

I think there is, because I saw a pattern like this in my last game as a totally unrelated count.

Hugues II Capet
Hugues III Capet
Hugues IV Capet
Hugues V Capet
Hugues VI Capet

etc. It was pretty funny.

In my most recent game as the Queen of Navarre, every single one of her three sons was named Munio. That's every son born to the queen.

So now I have three 'Prince Munio of Navarre' individuals in the game, so you can imagine what a headache it is to identify which one was referred to when an event mentions Prince Munio of Navarre.

Cursed Jimenas!

(Yes, I realise that I can manually change them to something different, but I prefer watching how the game handles it on its own instead of using Deus Ex Machina from the player's hand.)

Some cultures have a large % chance that sons will take their Grandfather's name, and sometimes a chance of their father's name.

For example the English part of the cultures.txt file (in the common folder) contains this:
# Chance of male children being named after their paternal or maternal grandfather, or their father. Sum must not exceed 100.
pat_grf_name_chance = 30
mat_grf_name_chance = 10
father_name_chance = 25

Other cultures have a 50/50 chance of either grandfather's name...

In that case, I would feel justified in editing them to have nicknames. Like how, of the Eudes (Eon in the game) of Penthievre's sons, one was named Alan Rufus, the other is named Alan something-or-other, I think whatever Latin for Alan the Black is.

It's actually not quite like that, even if the math seems like it should be. I've set father and grandfather to 50/50 respectively and not seen a common shared name for about three generations. I experimented further and put the father chance at 100% and what ended up happening was the name of the father became more common, but in a span of 200 years you *still* saw random, horrible introduced names.

I think it's hardcoded to introduce bad names :).

Honestly I like it when my guys get uncommon or weird names. In my game as a swedish count, and in all my games I ALWAYS use whatever name is the default in the box. I had a sons named Baggi, Torgeir, Faste, and Azur. I like odd names and especially unusual ones that stand out and sound nice. The most boring names in this game are dumb ones like William and Louis. Oh hello, another Henry...

I don't mind weird names as long as they make sense. A family that consistently uses the names Robert, William and Richard for about seven generations isn't suddenly going to name their son and heir Galliard. However; there are certain dynasty's that do use rather odd names, and that's fine and good.

It breaks my immersion when my grandson is named something awful like Abelard, despite there not being a single person in the family tree or connected to the character in any way named that.

Names are just odd in general. Starting to think its a mod issue with my game.

There is an heir to Isle of Man between off the east coast of Ireland. He has 3 kids. 2 girls, 1 boy. There names are...

Boy: Gofraid Mac Fingel
Girl: Dub-Dil Nic Fingel
Girl: Dubchoclaig Nic Fingal

Of House Ua lmair

W T F

His name is Fingal and his children use patronymics ("son of", "daughter of") apart from their dynastic name. Please note that that name of your dynasty in the middle ages was nothing like a modern surname. It was an actual family name, the name of your family, not necessarily something people called you by every day.

Honestly I like it when my guys get uncommon or weird names. In my game as a swedish count, and in all my games I ALWAYS use whatever name is the default in the box. I sometimes dislike Piasts in my games getting a ton of names the family didn't really, historically, use, some of which sounding like good names for a commoner or knight but not fit for a Piast prince. I guess people from other countries and cultures can feel the same about some of their dynasties.

It is indeed, until your children and grandchildren give their kids ridiculous out of date names. I hope Paradox allows us to name grandchildren soon.

My favourite moment was naming a son of an early ruler Poo Pants McTwat. Poo Pants went on to be a great ruler and lasted until a ripe old age. I laughed - hard - upon seeing that name crop up many times further down the line in my dynasty. Many relatives were called Poo Pants Mc Twat.

Suffice it to say, since discovering that names of successful rulers are used by the game automatically further down the line, even by the AI, I have gone to town on naming my sons and daughters amusing things.

Simple things amuse simple minds I suppose...
