It's basically what happens now with people making bugfixing mods, except this would allow PDX to make them official and then easily patch out bugs in small patches. They could credit the contributors in the patch notes. I know I would definitely contribute quite a few bugfixes.

Inpossible, for multiple reasons
1. Is illegal to do so, since github is for open source, while game is commercial, it is known as piracy also if you do so
2.then steam would destroy everything when you start the game
3.you aren't really expected to fix bugs of commercial game, since it is not open source....
Main thing is that game is not open source and changing code, even touching their files could be considered as illegal, piracy and theft, so impossivle
Maybe in 70 years, iirc, that is when copyright ends, unsure tho, you can make that, but surely not now
Don't even try to do it yourself, you might get heavy fines depending on the country you live in.

What you said doesn't make sense since I'm only proposing a fork of already moddable files anyway, i.e. files we can already edit and even post on the steam workshop.

Yeah, but it is commercial game, and if you fix bugs, you might then expect them to pay you and other stuff, I think at most you can fix small bugs for yourself or make a mod for it available to everyone, they are known for integrating small mods into the base game or if not that, they will consider it when doing new patch, you can make mod in github for Bugfix and everyone can contribute, you know, your idea does make sense, but it is market policy, so its code cannot be changed, it is already used for free games
