Happiness is a good term, but Approval may be an even better one, because once we get playable robots or emotionless species it makes no sense to measure an emotion they lack. Approval on the other hand is a much more universal term, that both emotional and emotionless beings can use to describe thier attitude towards the government.

But, hypothetically speaking, you could get POPs with high Happiness rating that still belong to a faction (i.e. they do not approve of your rule).

If this is possible and you would name "Happiness" "Approval" you would get people that don't approve of your rule but have a high approval rating, which makes no sense.

Is happiness not a form of approval? The experience of approving of the present situation? Not necessarily of a political situation, granted, but given that factions in Stellaris progress – based on support – from nothing to riots and open revolt isn't happiness a better thing to track? Disapproving happy people might join movements but they tend not to turn to violent resistance.

I'm not convinced approval isn't also an emotion anyway, or at least inseparable from emotion. The central problem of trying to represent anything emotionless is we don't know what that encompasses, what something intelligent but without emotion would be missing, or even if it is possible to be complexly intelligent and have no emotion.

But could you? When wiz got +15% happines many factions disbanded. As far as were shown the gameplay, happy pops join loyalist faction and dont cause trouble

How do you know a robot can't be happy/unhappy? If they start rebelling they must have attained sentience. So they can potentially be unhappy, it's not just a hormonal thing.

That aside I'd also be fine with Approval as the term used.
