Historically alum was extremely important in the Renaissance economy. It was used as fixer for dyes, and as such it was extremely valued and pricey. It was mined in the Papal States, in the eastern Aegean sea and in the Middle East.
It might perhaps help with making the Mediterranean richer as it historically was, while now it's dirt poor compared to northern European amount of trade
